Is Gov. Bobby Jindal Sabotaging Gulf Efforts for Political Gain?

Is Gov. Bobby Jindal Sabotaging Gulf Efforts for Political Gain?
He has delayed the deployment of National Guard troops, led a crusade to build sand berms that experts say won't work, and confused the planning of the spill response.
This story was written by Faiz Shakir, Amanda Terkel, Matt Corley, Benjamin Armbruster, Zaid Jilani, Alex Seitz-Wald, and Tanya Somanader.

Last year, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (R) -- a rising star in the GOP and potential nominee for the presidency in 2012 -- gave a widely mocked rebuttal to President Obama's State of the Union address, prompting many pundits to conclude that his national political career was over before it began. But, taking a cue from Rudy Giuliani's exploitation of the 9/11 attacks while mayor of New York City, Jindal saw a chance rebuild his political capital by using the Gulf oil spill. He sprang into action with press conferences and helicopter rides to show he's a take-charge leader. The governor quickly became Obama and the federal government's chief critic, relentlessly attacking their allegedly slow response to the spill and lambasting the "red tape and bureaucracy" preventing him from getting the job done. Jindal's theatrical deployment of these trappings of leadership has been largely rewarded by favorable press coverage, reigniting speculation of a 2012 run. But new revelations and a close inspection of the facts suggest that Jindal's sound and fury is little more than political grandstanding for the Fox News set, and it serves to obscure Jindal's own serious failings in the spill response effort. While Jindal has been relentless in attacking the federal government for dragging its feet, he has delayed the deployment of National Guard troops, led a crusade to build artificial sand berms that most experts say won't work, and confused the planning of the spill response. Moreover, experts said his "antagonism could actually slow down that response." "When that stuff happens, you actually take away the ability of the unified command to get their job done," said former Coast Guard official Doug Lentsch, who was involved in the Exxon Valdez disaster and helped develop the Oil Pollution Act of 1990. But the true impact of Jindal's blustery leadership may never be known, as Jindal vetoed a bill Friday that would have required him to make public all of his office's documents relating to the spill. "His excuse is he is afraid that BP would find out something Louisiana did, and I always thought justice was about the truth and facts," said Republican state Sen. Robert Adley.

Oil spill: Is Gulf safe for swimming?

Kimberly Blair • [email protected] • June 26, 2010

The Escambia County Health Department lifted a health advisory on Pensacola Beach on Friday on the advice of a beach official and against the advice of a federal environmental official.

But the advisory was not lifted for Gulf Islands National Seashore's Fort Pickens beach, immediately west of Pensacola Beach or Johnson Beach on Perdido Key.
And hours after the Pensacola Beach advisory was lifted, the health department asked for state approval to issue an oil-impact advisory that leaves the decision to swim in the Gulf of Mexico up to the discretion of individual beachgoers.

The signs would be posted on 41 of the 43 miles of Escambia County beaches — from the Florida-Alabama line to just west of Portofino Beach — impacted by oil.

Meanwhile, the Environmental Protection Agency plans to put decontamination stations along the beach, possibly as early as this weekend.

These moves send conflicting signals about how safe it is to swim in the Gulf of Mexico as the impacts of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill broadens.

No tests run
Lanza said the health department did not test the water or sand samples before lifting the health advisory. He did send out health department employees to look at the water before they covered up the health advisory signs.

Dick Snyder, director of the Center for Environmental Diagnostics and Bioremediation at the University of West Florida, began conducting water samples May 3 on Pensacola Beach every Tuesday and Thursday because beach and health officials were only doing visual assessments.

14. please..stop twisting my words..I don't even know the guy..nor do I care who or what he says!
Edited on Wed Jun-30-10 02:22 PM by flyarm
I just know damn well..our government fucked up..long before anyone in the states did, the states that are involved in this fucking mess..and Jindel does not run or have anything to do with all the other states on the Gulf of Mexico..it encompasses a damn lot of real estate..to blame him or any of the governors for the mess in the Gulf of Mexico is absurd on it's face!

Where the fuck was and is our congress that allowed this shit? Oh yeah..having lunch with the big oil boys..or their lobbyists!

Reading conprehension problems????? this is what i said..you don't understand ?????????

To quote myself.."because they fucked up long before Jindal did!..

read that again.."because they fucked up long before Jindal did!"

Where was Salazar???????

Why was the coast guard made part of the BP cover up?

Why was BP put in charge of our beaches and recovery of marine life and wild life?

Why was BP put in charge of the Marshes?

Why was BP allowed to bring in people who had no fucking clue what they were doing instead of hiring locals who do know what the fuck the Gulf is about and how to protect it?

Why was our president telling people to come on down and vacation and go swimming when no one had or has tested the damn water to see if it is safe?

Where was our government and this administration when BP was spraying shit we all had to breathe that was toxic beyond any chemicals ever sprayed in those numbers..and we had to breathe the shit!

Why did Obama turn over this entire disaster from the get go to BP???????????

While Obama played Golf and had WH parties..we were being subjected to god awful chemicals!

Don't even try to blame that on anyone but our federal government for shirking their responsibilities and passing off a cover up to BP!

Look who your government put in charge of this mess..and what they have done to our Gulf..our precious Gulf and its inhabitants!

And what shit we had as a coctail to breathe and still breathe!!

You want to come on down and swim in this shit?????????? Obama told you..come on down..........

Well come on down..put your kids or grandkids in this toxic soup!

15. just exactly what does it clarify..i don't hardly know the guy or anything about him
Edited on Wed Jun-30-10 05:25 PM by flyarm
are you insinuating something..if you are spell it out..

He is not my governor..nor do I know much about him..so what are you saying exactly?????????

I did not support him..I merely pointed out there are many many people who sabotaged the Gulf..long before Jindal..and after this disaster in the Gulf....you have anything real to add to that??????????Or are you just happy insinuating crass / bogus opinions ???

Try looking at our congress to guilt of Sabotaging our Gulf!!..That would be a good place to start.

Start looking at BP who caused this fucking mess..and is poisoning us!!

Look at Goldman Sachs involvement..look into all in our government from the bottom up!

No one governor caused this or sabotaged this..they are just stuck with the fucking mess!

9. Yes, like you say, Flyarm, Jindal f'd up
Edited on Wed Jun-30-10 09:54 AM by BeFree
But he is in a long line of f'ups.

The whole thing has become mired in politics and Jindal is just playing his part.

Ignore those who would try and twist your words. They are also playing politics. Just like Jindal. Shame on them.

"Less Government" in one breath, "More Government" in the next...

All I'm seeing is that the modern GOP philosophy is built on sand.
