Do our 'leaders' know something HUGE that they're not telling us?
One explanation of the massively destructive and anti-human decisions of our political 'leaders' over the last 30 years might be explained if they knew, for example, that a major die-off of homo sapiens lurks in our near future. If most of us will die anyway, it makes "sense" for them to so easily cause so much suffering and death.

Or perhaps they all are just psychopathic.

2. Maybe it's an "X-Files" thing...
where the government knows the aliens are going to repopulate the world sometime in the (near?) future and they just don't care anymore...

6. You've just described a self-fulfilling prophecy
First they imagine it, then they make it happen.

The same as repukes deriding government and then taking office and making sure government fails.

Bastards.

8. Well, they know oil production is flat and will soon begin to decline. And,
they're not telling us about it. And, short of any practical and scalable solutions to this problem, it's not surprising they're not telling us. It's also not surprising that, knowing our way of life is about to come to an end, those in the know are milking it for all it's worth.

9. I'll be really glad when 2012 is here and gone...
...and the world is still around.

Between 1984, Y2K, 2001, 2012, etc, it seems like we've been waiting for the world to end.
Once there aren't any more of those fictional "end times" dates in our collective consciousness, maybe we'll actually get off our asses and do something about the problems we are facing.

Either that, or some bozo will make a movie about aliens with perfect vision killing us all in 2020, and we'll have to wait for that year to pass...

27. Somebody is always predicting the end of the world - this is not a new phenomenon
My favorite site for reading about doomsday predictions is "It's the End of the World As We Know It - Again" - http://alma-geddon.com/ (Cool, he's gotten his own domain - his site used to be hosted on Tripod or something similar.)

He says:
The following pages contain the most comprehensive collection of apocalyptic prophecies I could compile. Plus, discussion about the various types of Doomsday warnings and obsessions, quirks of the calendar, predictions of apocalypse from around the world and assorted other related stuff. So, if you think you have time to look them over before the Big One hits, the UV rays fry you, the nuclear winter freezes you, the Rapture captures you, the aliens abduct you, the earth opens up to swallow you, the black helicopters come to get you or the dreaded Satanic computer pixies plant a bar code in your forehead and plunge the world into commie-pinko conspiracy chaos, then, by all means, enjoy!

AND he does it all with a sense of humor. No site that quotes Tom Lehrer on the front page can be all bad!

Have a watch of Adam Curtis' documentary series The Trap, all 3 parts are on Google Video and go a long way to explaining the actions of a number of politicians.

25. Don't you think there is something going on in the gulf that our government isn't telling us?
You bet it is. Am disappointed in Obama. Not because isn't trying to do the right things. I think he needs to kick asses and take names. They are lying to us. The republicans only want to drill more they don't care about the food chain and how it effects the whole world. They are only worried about the bottom line. I am worried that corporation have finally taken over and we the people don't have the power. It's time to stand up because the millionaires in congress are getting richer off of us and we are losing.

32. No. I think it's just institutionalized stupidity, fostered by greed and enabled by technology.
You have multinational corporations whose only real interest is short-term profits (and whose behavior is essentilly psychopathic, as I posted in a topic a while back), able to bribe officials and sway elections. It's an insane system, damaging to the environment and to everyone but relatively few people whose power and wealth temporarily seem to be exempting them from the destruction of the environment and economies worldwide.

34. Very funny thing I heard just today that directly relates to this...
Edited on Sun Jun-27-10 01:15 PM by FormerDittoHead
I don't know if I'm in the mood to type this much because it refers to an episode of "This American Life"
http://www.thisamericanlife.org/radio-archives/episode/399/Contents-Unknown

There are two items in the first segment one with a letter that British Sub Commanders are required to read if England is destroyed and the second is about a hidden letter that a therapist wrote which explained why Hitler tried to take over the world.

The point of both stories was that by having this "secret explanation" hidden somewhere, we get to have it both ways.

In the case of the Subs, the Brits have a way to deal with the internal contraction of the M.A.D. nuclear strategy (explained in the show linked above) and the second promises to make sense of Hitler's rise to power and his quest to take over so much of it..

I'm also reminded of the recent execution by fire squad where one shooter was given a blank. Same idea.

Anyway, I think people coming up with such a theory as in your OP are suffering from the same thing - so, in order to be able to deal with the contradictions of our society they make something like this up to give them that cushion.
