Texas GOP Platform Advocates Criminalizing Gay Marriage, Banning Strip Clubs, Pornography
Well, I can see them being against 'teh gay,' but strip clubs and porn? They need to consult with their Grand Poobah, Michael Steele.
______________________________________________

Texas Republicans recently unveiled a policy platform that includes a statement of support for legislation that would make it a felony to issue a marriage license to same-sex couples as well as for an official to perform a marriage ceremony for gay partners wishing to wed. The 25-page proposal debuted last week as a guiding light for the state GOP over the next two years defines its position by saying:

Marriage Licenses - We support legislation that would make it a felony to issue a marriage license to a same-sex couple and for any civil official to perform a marriage ceremony for such.

The proposal from Republicans in the Lone Star state makes the following claims related to the party's view of homosexuality:

"We believe that the practice of homosexuality tears at the fabric of society, contributes to the breakdown of the family unit, and leads to the spread of dangerous, communicable diseases."

"Homosexual behavior is contrary to the fundamental, unchanging truths that have beenordained by God, recognized by our country's founders, and shared by the majority of Texans."

"Homosexuality must not be presented as an acceptable "alternative" lifestyle in our public education and policy, nor should "family" be redefined to include homosexual "couples."

1. Ban strip clubs in Texas? What will the Republican legislators do at night?
Couldn't possibly happen. They'd have to go home to their wives. (Gasp!)

:sarcasm:

7. They tried to ban lap dances in Houston one time I remember
Said the ladies dancing had to remain at a safe distance so no touching could occur.

Guess they didn't have the audacity to close the industry outright.

22. The same thing they do now.
Bring the hooker to the office and leave the wife and kids at home.

2. Banning porn in Texas means no more GOP Conventions here.
Even state conventions. They wouldn't even be able to order movies for their hotel rooms.

3. Makes as much sense as banning booze in Las Vegas.
What the hell are they thinking? Are they trying to self-destruct? Because they sure are trying hard to lose the next elections.

4. Texas GOP advocates obviously unconstitutional legislation.
Lucky for them; they will never have to be called to account for any of it. :eyes:

14. They're largely basing this off "we no longer recognize federal law," no?
Not that that, you know, works, but even so.

5. Talk about obscene!!!
The recently rolled-out platform from the Texas GOP has also come under scrutiny for advocating to outlaw all "sexually-oriented businesses" -- including strip clubs and "all pornography" -- while allowing virtually unrestricted access to oil and gas drilling. (emphasis added)

6. Ignore it. Just tells you whom they want to drive to the polls this year.
GOP platforms are not indicative of any Republican politician's actual beliefs, if such can even be said to exist.

10. Don't ignore it. Publicize it.
This is a dagger in the back of one of their key demographics, the angry white male. I doubt most of the angry white males that are marching in teabagger rallies really want to eliminate strip clubs and porn. It might give them 2nd thoughts about voting Republicker.

Their demographic is also those who love pretending to oppose porn, strip clubs, etc.

11. Why is it that the GOP brays constantly that they want smaller government
and to keep the government out of peoples' lives and then turn around and demand that the same government they want to downsize legislate their morality. I'd love for the Texas legislature to take the GOP up on their proposals, outlaw strip clubs and pornography and then wait for the inevitable arrest of Texas GOP lawmakers or party officials for patronizing or possessing.

24. The lunatic fringe goes mainstream
Further...

restrict citizenship to children born in the United States whose parents are citizens

end federal sponsorship of pre-kindergarten schools

impose a jail sentence on any illegal immigrant in the state

cut off all bilingual education after a student's fourth year in a U.S. public school

legalize corporal punishment in public schools

teach creationism as a viable alternative scientific theory

demand that Congress evict the United Nations from U.S. soil and end American membership in the global body.

26. In order to ban strip clubs
Edited on Tue Jun-22-10 05:52 PM by Sheepshank
they'd first have to change the 1st Amendment....dance, even nude dance is a form of expression and is protected form of speech/communication.

Time, place and manner (think zoning regulations), can offer current restrictions and some enhanced regulations, but outright banning? Not possible.

They are simply talking out of their asses in the hopes of looking good to some possible voters. A very good example of empty rhetoric.
