'Touchdown Jesus' statue fire not a sign from God, Solid Rock Church leader says

...Bishop disagrees with people who lit up Internet comment boards suggesting – either jokingly or seriously – that the lightning strike could have been a sign that God disapproved of the statue. During the statue’s six years in front of the church, “he’s weathered a lot of storms,” Bishop said....

But Hurricane Katrina WAS a punishment from God for the sins of New Orleans, got it?

...Monday’s traffic-stopping fire struck just before the church was to begin repainting the statue. Because of insurance coverage, “Now we get to build a whole brand-new one, paid-for,” Bishop said. “We are blessed.”....

Um, that's IF your insurance company doesn't enact their "Act of God" clause and agrees to pay up.

...The lightning hit in spite of preventive measures, Neu said.

“Everything around the structure and even the structure itself has lightning resistors and grounding rods,” Neu said, but he added that the unpredictable nature of lightning can decrease effectiveness of those devices....

Could one perhaps say that lightning is divinely unpredictable?

1. Even God must do a facepalm at times.
That bad art must've been too much for the big man upstairs.

I meant (rhetorically) that I guess one would have to see it in person in order to appreciate it and since I'd only seen a photo, I could not.

8. I will be eagerly following the "blessing" of their fat insurance payout.
I have a hard time believing any insurance company would reimburse for six stories of flammable foam ignited by lightning.

rebuild it for something like over $700,000. I would think if they were Christians that $700,000 could be put to better use. Why would a church need insurance anyway? Where the hell is Reverend Phelps? God probably struck the thing with lightening because of the DADT military thingy didn't he.

18. Damn, seven hundred grand?
We could run our congregation for ten or eleven years on that. But we're only housing homeless people, feeding the hungry, and visiting the sick and imprisoned. What's that compared to a six-story paean to the movie Platoon?

That's where thunder comes from, right?

Well, how do we know there wasn't a malfunction in the wiring in the bowling alley. Or maybe one of them had some stray static electricity in his cell phone...

Why are we always blaming God for shit others do?

12. The aim was more to point out the hypocrisy of declaring hurricanes and earthquakes...
...as "messages from God", but excluding a direct lightning strike to a graven image of Jesus.

27. I remember when a tornado hit salt lake city
It hit part of the Mormon church, and I thought I wonder what the church is going to say about it. Remember when, was it Falwell?, state that NOLA was destroyed by Katrina because of their sin? Even though, it was the levee that broke that caused most of the damage, which would make it man made. So, I wonder what he thinks about the flooding in Oklahoma, and the devastating flash flood in Arkansas? It seems when some devastation hits part of the so-called bible belt, usually no comment--but if it hits a place those bible thumpers consider full of sin, then God was punishing the place. What total hypocrisy.
