Both Props #16 and 17 are defeated!
No 16 Local Electricity Providers 1,800,205 47.4% 1,993,053 52.6%
No 17 Auto Insurance Pricing 1,820,336 47.8% 1,980,248 52.2%

This is with 98.2% of all precincts reporting.

I'm sad that Marcy Winograd lost to that war-mongering Jane Harmon, but the fact that these propositions lost makes me feel a lot better.

2. How'd The Proposition Changing Primary Elections Go...
IRC, you folks were voting on a two tier system similar to what Arkansas has...if a candidate doesn't get 50% of the vote, there's a run off between the top two vote getters. Any idea how that vote turned out?

3. It passed...
Yes 14 Primary Election Participation 2,061,015 54.2% 1,747,268 45.8%

I hate to admit it, but if this two tier system is part of this proposition, I am unaware of it...

4. Here's What You Just Bought...
http://ballotpedia.org/wiki/index.php/California_Proposition_14,_Top_Two_Primaries_Act_(June_2010)

A California Top Two Primaries Act ballot proposition was on the June 8, 2010 ballot in California as a legislatively-referred constitutional amendment, where it was approved.
Proposition 14 requires that candidates run in a single primary open to all registered voters, with the top two vote-getters meeting in a runoff. The new system will take effect in the 2012 elections.<1>

Specifically, Proposition 14 provides for a "voter-nominated primary election" for each state elective office and congressional office in California. Voters can vote in the primary election for any candidate for a congressional or state elective office without regard to the political party affiliations of either the candidate or the voter. Candidates can choose whether or not to have their political party affiliation displayed on the ballot.

I'm surprised this proposition didn't get more attention...

Cheers...

5. Thanks!
Now that I see the wording, I do remember...

I think this one got less attention since there was so much hoopla over the others, and over the races.

6. I can't believe that passed
I think it shows how many California voters have gone Independent in the last 10 years. People don't want to be tagged with a party name, but then still want the privilege of voting for party candidates. Anyways I imagine it won't be long for the party's to go old school and start picking their candidates in back rooms again. Why would I want Republicans to pick MY candidate? At least prop 13 passed again. Heaven knows California is awash with Tax revenue and god forbid someone that increases the value of their property pay one cent more in property tax.

7. More Lazy Media
I'm seeing this more and more this year...be it not knowing a Lt. Governor candidate in my state was a wife beater until AFTER the vote, or the sudden media shitstorm around how nuts Paulbot Jr. is, this is yet another political story that fell through the cracks as the media was fixated more on the popularity contests with Whitmann and Fiorina.

A reason for this is the downsizing and outright elimination of local newsrooms and newspapers. Many of these operations no longer have the resources to investiage and have become headline services.

IMO, this is a terrible law and as you say it all but cuts independents out of any chance in winning a major office. The party bosses won a big one.
