Poll question: Unemployed?
Edited on Sun Jun-06-10 09:04 PM by supernova
There's been a lot of discussion this weekend about longterm unemployment.

I wanted to do a little demographic survey.

2. does "6 months" mean 6 months or less? Thanks.
since the other option is 6+, am I right in assuming 6 means 6 or less?

is the top choice in each age group. I'm trying to figure out if there's a way to tell who's been hit the hardest this time around.

edit: All I know is, I didn't have a problem having/keeping a job until I turned 40.

:grr: :grr:

23. Same here....
Well actually for me it was around 44. But yeah, I never thought that my working/earning years would be over at my current age of 48. But I have given up looking; there doesn't seem to be much point in continuing to bang my head against the proverbial brick wall. Unless that point would be to demoralize my confidence and self-esteem even more!

Oh, and in answer to your survey, I voted 35-50 unemployed +6 months. Looking at the results so far, it's pretty surprising to see how many folks are unemployed. But then again, here we all are on the internet on a Monday morning.....

Thanks for doing the survey. It's pretty eye-opening (and sad ;( ).

25. Aww,

Sorry for your troubles. I'm right there with you.

I have decided to still look for jobs, but my main focus now, as long as UI holds out. is starting a new business. Completely unrelated to my employee years.

28. I agree that starting some kind of business is the way to go right now.
Honestly, most of the jobs out there don't even pay well enough to support yourself, much less a family.

 back at you, and best of luck with your business endeavors!

breath category (unlikely to find FT or get a senority pin here, TYVM) and one in the 60+ long-term unemployed(spouse-breadwinner(?)) still looking unsuccessfully because early retirement alone is NOT an option...hangin' in there cause we're brand-new grandparents and have a 30-year-old still at home (?-apt) who just recently became employed after a full year of unemployment (Grad + one year). We're all helping each other as best we can, but I gotta say, I'm not optimistic looking forward except for a talk-is-cheap plan to take a last ditch SCREW IT ALL WALK-ABOUT ADVENTURE and go from there, where or how, unknown.

17. I could make a separate poll for underemployed folks
and make it age related. You have a P/T or make-do job for now that pays the bills, but it's not what you wanted to do with your lives.

9. Might be a bit skewed because the title of the post seemed to be just for the unemployed...
and then once clicking, it shows it is for all to answer the question.

19. I was looking for
the age ranges of people who are totally unemployed.

I may do another poll with the same ages for those who consider themselves underemployed.

Or something that you have been planning to do? Or maybe just doing it sooner because of the economy?

27. Haven't worked in a very long time even though I might like to.
Edited on Mon Jun-07-10 11:59 AM by azmouse
My husband makes very good money. I can only find jobs that pay minimum wage or just over. Once taxes are taken out so little is left that it isn't worth my while to work. Also, since we don't need the money I would feel bad about taking a scarce job away from someone who really needed it.

When I worked in the '80s I could earn a lot more money and have way better benefits than I could find today. Something is very wrong with that picture.
