BP claims that its latest containment cap is capturing 10,000 barrels of oil a day.

So if 10,000 barrels are rising through the almost invisible containment cap pictured in the video, how many barrels per day would you estimate are spewing out around the containment cap?

My most conservative estimate is 40,000 barrels a day. How about yours?

1. At least 50,000. What a tragedy. The total amount of oil that will end up spewing into the Gulf

would have been of little help to our energy crisis, yet the harm it will now do is massive. It makes me ill to think of it.

3. House testimony by Purdue M.E. professor puts it at 95,000 barrels

Today, a Purdue University mechanical engineering professor - Steven Wereley - testified to the House Committee on Commerce and Energy that 95,000 barrels a day are currently leaking into the Gulf. That's 3,990,000 gallons - just shy of 4 million gallons - per day.

Steve Wereley, an associate professor of mechanical engineering at Purdue University, earlier this month made simple calculations from a video BP released on May 12 and came up with a flow of 70,000 barrels a day, NPR reported last week. Werely on Wednesday told a House Commerce and Energy Committee subcommittee that his calculations of two leaks that show up on videos BP released on Tuesday showed 70,000 barrels from one leak and 25,000 from the other.

He said the calculation could be off by 20 percent — meaning the spill could range from between 76,000 to 104,000 barrels a day. But Wereley said he would need to see videos that were not compressed and showed the flow over a longer period so that it would be possible to get a better calculation of the mix of oil and gas from the wellhead.
