chinese iPed challenges apple iPad - only 105$
Edited on Tue Jun-01-10 01:58 PM by demoleft
A first copy of Apple’s touch pad, dubbed “IPED” is already available in China at discounted price. The clone of the iPad, filmed by a Japanese TV, closely resembles the original.

It runs on the Android system developed by Google and would be equipped with an Intel processor, but costs only 105 dollars (86 euros), when the ‘iPad is $ 499 U.S. and 499 euros in Europe.

Pictures of the IPED on YouTubeshow the gadget sold in a store of Shenzen where even the packaging looks like the iPad.

On the website specialized in new technologies TECH, a test of the IPED believes that “is IPED equipped with a counterfeit Intel and Android, which presents itself as an Apple product, which is not so bad.”

2. Does it run Android or Android 2.2
IIRC, Android 2.2 will support flash 10.1
Does IPad fully support flash? I don't think it does.

I'd be curious to see storage, ram, processor, display, and battery life states compared.

5. this is from techi.com, a review of the iPed
"Sounding more like a banned iPhone app than a tablet, the iPed is exactly what you’re probably thinking: a Chinese knockoff. Now available (!!!) in Shenzhen, China, the iPed is an Intel-driven, Android-based copycat packaged like an Apple product and, to be honest… it doesn’t look half bad. An Android device for ¥9,600 ($105)? Yes, please.

However, this device isn’t without its shortcomings. From the looks of this video, it’s mighty, mighty slow. Though allegedly powered by an Intel chip, the device apparently only sports up to 16gigs of space, and runs on 128mb of RAM – in this technological climate, barely enough to power a calculator.

Whatever the case, this is by and large the most impressive ripoff from China I’ve ever seen – much better than, say, the KenSingTon ‘Chintendo Vii’ (which I swear is also a real product) – and proves one thing, if nothing else: they’re getting better (and faster) at this. Give ‘em another decade and Apple may want to consider taking this copycat business a mite more seriously.

Behold, as bewildered Japanese newscasters weigh in on the iPed’s sudden appearance on the Chinese market."

3. Asus will have an android tablet shortly.
I'm not too keen on the form factor, but my guess is that Apple's offering won't hold up too well against the competition. Asus' offering will include flash. It's a gotta-have for a media tablet.

4. ASUS makes good componets too.
Usability and program support aside, I wouldn't feel bad about choosing an ASUS over an Apple.
Asus typically uses good components and has solid warranties.
If it supports flash and is cheaper - I could see it displacing the iPad.

6. I have an Asus Eee 1000H - like it a lot
Glad to hear they going to make a slate. I would love one that you can draw on to use as a light-weight digital sketch book, plus e-reader. Now, that would be cool.

11. Well why should the Holy Steve care at all about me when he's got
drooling fanboys/girls forking over their cash to join his cult? No loss on my end. I don't covet the Holy Steve's gadgets.
