I think the US Government should pay for the entire Gulf cleanup.
All we have to do is execute BP as a "corporate person," nationalize all their assets, and pay for the cleanup out of the profits from running our new national oil company.

1. Unfortunately US citizens will pay for the entire clean-up and its aftermath
That's just the way it will be.

And the lobbiest will feed nuts to the apes within the Beltway will continue to argue for liability caps and greater access to potential energy reserves in US territory both land and water.

sad but true.

4. Regardless of whether it's BP or the government, it will be a long time before the funds
are made available.

I think every politician- federal, state and local ought to pony up every single nickle that they've taken from oil companies and any and every interest group that promoted deregulated drilling over the past 10 years.

To be enforced via liens and security interests on theirs and their interest groups' property- only to be expunged once it's proven that their share of the costs were paid.

10. Yep. Pay the entire Board of Directors of BP 10c/hr and make them go do
heavy lifting and dirty work until the job is done to the satisfaction of their victims.

12. Oh don't worry. We will be paying 100% of the cleanup.
BP will pay a tiny percentage that will be refunded on the back end by subsidies and tax cuts.

Yup, we'll pay for this for decades, first in the killing of the gulf, then in the monetary cost of cleaning up what we can.

13. If we're going to pay for their fuckups with our sons' and daughters' lives and with
the earth's resources and with our national treasury; ALL extraction industry should be nationalized so at the very least we share the profit.

16. Simply brilliant and so simple when you think about it rationally: now if only our
government will for this one time act in the interest of our country rather than in the interest of a giant international corporation.
