Poll question: head to head: Gore v. FDR
I thought Gore v. Edwards would be closer.

Now I'm pulling out the big guns.

If Gore beats FDR, we got to go throw a bag over his head and force him to run for president.

1. FDR won World War II, lifted millions out of poverty, kept the elderly from dying alone and afraid
Hard to beat that record. No lack of black marks on FDR's record, of course.

2. I'm hard pressed to think of a better president. Lincoln had a fairly unique set of problems
so he is kind of apples and oranges with FDR.

3. Wait a minute, how many terms did FDR serve
before his policies really kicked in and started making serious differences?

I think Gore is just as smart (or smarter) than FDR, and I think that under the same circumstances Gore could have been just as effective as FDR.

Of course, "I think that" because circumstances are much different now than they were then. Gore also has the experience of FDR to draw upon.

I honestly don't think it's a fair comparison or a fair question.

Let's evaluate FDR in the environment of his time, and let's evaluate Gore in the present environment.

11. FDR was more leftwing than Gore is today on economic issues.

I don't think Gore would go as far as FDR wanted to go in instituting an economic bill of rights.

13. Okay, that devil-smiley there's kind of rubbing me the wrong way.
It's like, "Yeah, I'm taking a human rights catastrophe and trivializing it to make political hay. Aren't I a dickens?"

And all the previous "humorous" posts about FDR being dead and all... My thought processes not always the sharpest when posting late at night.

14. i think FDR would beat any Democrat including former Presidents
like Clinton, Carter and even KEnnedy.

but i would be interested in a FDR v. RFK. i would say FDR will probably still win but it might be closer.

18. I'm hard put to think of a better leader of even other countries.
Gandhi was more of a non-violent revolutionary than policy-making leader.

15. We have seen Gore in many situations but never as the President
however; one thing I think Gore could provide is the level of confidence FDR was able to inspire in people. Now, having said that, FDR was a very polarizing figure; it seems that people either loved him or hated him, not much of a middle on that one.

But to those who loved him, which was the majority of Americans, he was able to provide that necessary inner feeling and confidence that says "We Can Do It!" I think Gore would probably be just as polarizing, in his own way and with his own set of issues to deal with, but I believe he could invigorate the majority of Americans with the requisite attitude of "We Can Do This!"

We are lacking that now because, IMHO, not enough of our citizens are thinking seriously about what is at stake, and because the current leadership provides no real ideas or inspiration...only what seems to be a "corporations first" mentality toward the world, and a "faith-based" approach to domestic and foreign policy; like Watt said "Jesus will return when the last tree is cut down" or words to that effect. That attitude holds true in the present, and in spades.

I wish we did have an FDR to lead us now and I think Gore could rise to his level; neither man was/is perfect, but the good, solid parts of their character outweigh(ed) their flaws, something the current administration and, perhaps, too many of the Democratic candidates, have wrong-way-round.

Sorry for any lack of lucidity; been trying on tuxes all day. It late, me tired, me go bed soon...

19. I Love Gore...
... but some are needed elsewhere. Carter was an OK president, but was a fabulous humanitarian. This time around I say No... but the future is always open.

22. Exactly how many Democrats today are as leftwing on economic issues as FDR? Answer: Not many
And that's pretty sad, given FDR's track record with social programs and investments in infrastructure.

It's not really even close or fair.
