Radio host Kevin Price: Receive government benefits... lose your right to vote

In the early days of the Republic, people had to be property owners and even taxpayers before they were allowed to vote. Furthermore, the federal government was very limited in what it could do. With only seventeen enumerated powers and those voting having a vested interest, frugal government was much easier to achieve and maintain.

(SNIP)

The classical economist john Stuart Mill advocated the bold proposition that, if people received any government assistance, they would have to turn in their right to vote until they were no longer on the government dole. This policy would apply to the mega rich, the very poor and everyone in between who were getting direct government assistance. People seem to be concerned about "influence peddling." They warn about lobbyists and political action committees throwing money at politicians in order to get their vote on key issues. Yet, influence peddling runs both ways -- it is a two sided coin. Politicians who want to get reelected make all sorts of promises of money, goods, or services in order to buy votes. If the voter became disenfranchised while on the government's budget, politicians would have to find other ways of getting our votes.

Ummm... wow. So now it's OK to talk openly about denying citizens the right to vote.

This is no fringe whacko. Here is how this Price describes himself: "Kevin Price is Host of the Price of Business radio show on CNN 650, CBS Radio, AOL Radio, and Yahoo Radio. He is Publisher of USBusinessDaily.com and its affiliates. He is an award winning author of several books and his articles appear at USAToday.com, Reuters, and Chicago Sun Times. Kevin speaks frequently on business, political, and cultural issues. He is often seen on FoxNews.com's Strategy Room. He has a BA in economic history from Abilene Christian University."

4. So, according to Price, in order to save democracy, we have to destroy it?
Fuck, these loons just don't have any sense of irony, do they?

There is an anti-democratic, authoritarian thread that runs through right-wing thinking.

33. Funny thing is, ultimately, it's also self-defeating.
Okay, so we don't let anyone vote who gets government assistance.

That means those who are left voting would abolish most forms of government assistance.

Then you'd have pretty much all of the "undesirables" voting again.

Price didn't think this through, did he?

10. that means pretty much all of the military and government employees are out...
corporate execs, too (but they don't even need to vote; they just buy congresscritters)

so what is this proposal supposed to solve? I'd rather see some campaign finance and primary format reforms...

12. I always use this argument when I hear this shit
All homeowners receive a subsidy by having a mortgage deduction. That only leaves renters to vote. Shuts them up real quick.

23. It doesn't leave renters either
Rental property is partially subsidized through an IRS deduction on passive loss. Point out renters don't pay property taxes and someone will immediately scream "it's built into your rent payments!" so...obviously if they're paying the property tax they're also receiving the deduction for passive loss through the proxy who actually owns the building. Hence, no renter would be allowed to vote.

Basically, the only people who COULD vote are rich people who own their homes outright.

26. Renters don't actually take it
the owner of the property takes it on his business taxes.

34. That's true, in a sense...
but rental rates would be higher if the deduction didn't exist. (Just as in conservative dreamland rates would be lower if there were no property taxes on rentals--in reality, if you're renting a house for $1000 per month and there's a $1200/year property tax on it, the rate isn't going to drop to $900/month if the property tax suddenly vanished.)

36. the renter does not get it as a deduction
on their taxes. That is the only way it is a subsidy. secondly, I rent property and it's different than you think. It really isn't a factor when you rent.
