This is great! They're grilling the BP folks, with barbecue sauce!
House Judiciary Committee, headed by John Conyers.

Edit: the first rep. is Hank Johnson (D-GA).

6. Asking about the corporations moving operations offshore!
Edited on Thu May-27-10 01:41 PM by Wednesdays
Judy Chu (D-CA) now grilling the panel.

She's also asking about the Vietnamese fisherman in the Gulf. She says they can't speak English too well, and so they can't get info about their legal options. "Are you requiring them to sign liability waivers?" Corporate representative: "We never did that." Mississippi Atty. General: "Oh yes, they did."

Rep. Chu: "The translations are inadequate. Your translated 'deck hands' into 'hands growing out of decks.'"

Next up : Rep. Ted Deutsch (D-FL). (Repugs are nowhere to be seen...I think they're in hiding!)

Rep. Deutsch: "Why limit liability? Why shouldn't we change to law to remove the cap?"
A: "The Act only applies to maritime law."
Haliburton Guy: "We'd agree to any reasonable change in the law."

Charles Gonzalez (D-TX).
Rep. Gonzalez: "Are the current laws adequate to instill responsibility, and to make victims 'whole'?"
BP: "We will follow the law."
