DUer MuseRider trapped by flood waters in Kansas
I just talked to Muse. She is just south of Topeka, and was unable to get out until this evening because of flooding. She has had 20" of rain since Friday and 11" last night. One of her horses was trapped in the mud earlier today and she called the vet but he couldn't come because the roads were impassable. The horse finally freed himself but is old and not feeling too well this evening.

Muse said the Wakarusa River, normally a tame little stream, is out of its banks by 10 blocks. There are propane tanks floating in the road. People in Wakarusa, the nearest town, have been evacuated. :scared:

Muse called to make sure everyone else is okay. Her satellite is out so she can't get online. I told her I would post her news and send only the best DU vibes her way.

This weather in Kansas is bad, folks. We have had nothing but rain for days and it is supposed to rain all week. There is water standing in my front yard and I am not in a flood plain.

And to top it all off, dipshit dubya is coming to Greensburg on Wednesday to grace us with his obnoxious presence. :puke:

26. not bad at all...
everything seemed to be heading NE up through Pittsburgh KS, and going further north. Nevada Missouri, and some surrounding area's looked like they got a lot of weather....but most of it seemed to be going NE....

We got some heavy rain/thunderstorms, but they didn't last long...it was rain mostly. I notice some lower counties on the Oklahoma/KS borders, which have been in flood/thunderstorm/tornado watches for most of the day....

I hope it calms down...this time of year(especially May it seems) seems to be very destructive....In the past 4yrs I've seen two tornado's, both up in Lawrence...one in May of 03, and March of last year.....

Poor thing. Tell her I'm thinking about her. I heard one of the news programs talking about the Wakie being out of its banks near Topeka. I didn't know it was out near her.

The city here shut down some streets here because of flooding. I had to take a small detour this morning to get to the park for the dogs' morning walk. The street was open by the time we were headed back and we haven't had as nearly as much rain as they have down the road Muse's way.

47. Funny story about the Wakarusa river
and Lawrence KS...

Lawrence was originally named Wakarusa, as the Native Americans had long called a crossing of the Wakarusa just to the east of the limestone bluffs that overlook the Kaw (Kansas river). Anyway, the town fathers decided that Wakarusa wasn't a good name for their town because someone finally translated the name for them.

Wakarusa means "Horse Shit".

Now that I got that bit of trivia out... I hope Muse is fine and stays safe.

52. Best wishes to my fellow Kansans
We've got quite a bit of storm season left. I was fortunate to find a way to get into town this morning. I never in my long lifetime remember parts of Topeka being evacuated for floods. Never. I This was citywide. Every creek went out of it's banks. 500 water rescues by 8:00 am this morning. Some places wont crest here until tomorrow. Some have already crested. The local media say we are going to be dry tonight, but there is a chance of rain through the next 7 days. Parts of Kansas City will flood tomorrow.

10 inches here in one night. It was incredible. Stay safe.

103. Send her my concern for her and her horses well being
She's one of my favorite DUers, a great heart and sharp mind both.

Hopefully she has enough feed for the animals and herself to wait this out and won't be attempting to travel. The horse is no doubt exhausted from fighting the mud right now, if she can stable it and keep it dry I bet it will be alright.

Now for an odd bit of advice from someone who lives in flood prone country. Tell her to boil her water, be it well or city there's a very good chance the source is contaminated from the rain runoff. Water supplies are usually the first thing to get contaminated when there's flooding and it's better to be safe than sorry.

Let her know she's in my thoughts and I'm also sending good vibes her direction.

118. I'M BACK!!!
At least I am back for a short time, who knows how long my connection will last. Big wind must have knocked my dish and since it is hanging on my decrepit barn it easily gets out of alignment.

Man what a couple of days. We ended up with about 19 inches of rain. The creek (usually about 2 inches deep and 3 feet wide at maximum) became a raging river and took out most of the house at the end of the block. It was about 2 blocks wide at the highest point yesterday, now still up but receding. Thankfully before I bought this place about 12 years ago I did extensive research to get FEMA off my back. I am above the flood plain, enough so that I can now prove it will not flood me out.

Operations were run from the drive to my farm since it was dry. They would launch a boat over the creek the pull it around the corner and launch again in the river. It looked like the mighty Mississippi and was running fast. I don't even want to know what has happened down there, still can't get to it.

Thanks everyone. I was always fine. I have a little apartment with the basics and I went and bought food thinking this was going to be a long haul. I can get in and out now so I am fine but please think of those who are not. This was the worst ever in Wakarusa and pretty bad in Topeka too.

Horse is OK. Standing dry in 2 stalls, pissed off that I won't let him out with the others. Kinda funny, he is really too old to do much about being mad but he did try to bite me, first time in 12 years. He is about 30 but we do not know for sure, ancient for a horse but he still has strong teeth!

Wakarusa means horse shit? That cracks me up. I love my little community, about 2 blocks long with no other streets and horse shit is my life so it is perfect.

Proud, thanks.

Everyone thanks.

Comer...I tried to call you but you changed your cell phone number! I was going to ask you if you could bring me a boat but mostly I did want to see you with your pants rolled up. Hubba Hubba! ;)

BTW. Firemen, no matter how hunky you are, you are never going to get the ladies interested with shorts held up by those big suspenders and knee high boots. It may be very practical but I about lost it when I saw that. Of course they were out in boats trying to catch loose floating propane tanks and tie them to the trees and that was funny enough but when they got out of the boats I just had to walk back up to the farm. God bless them but dang that looks funny!

Thanks everyone! I just tried to post this but my connection is so slow I can't find it so I will try again, if there end up being more than one could someone please contact a mod because I doubt I will be able to get back in until later and I would be SO embarrassed by a double or triple post! :)

123. Great to know you're doing well!
Here's this morning's horse story at my place to make you smile.

My ewes dropped their lambs last week; I only have a few, no big deal. Their pasture is next to the horse pasture.

Apparently, one of the little ones found another place in the fence for me to fix, and squeezed into the horse pasture. Got lost. Ran around calling frantically to mommy, but couldn't find her own pasture.

All the ruckus brought family out of the house; they arrived in time to see my mare corral the little one, comfort her, and herd her back to the fence, where she squeezed through and found her anxious mom.

Take good care, MuseRider.

133. Oh that is so wonderful!
I have a funny horse/goat story. One of my baby pygmy's has a lot of bravado as a young kid will often have. Those little boys are so funny. Anyway, he got into the horse pen, his favorite new game, and started running around. My horses are cutting horses and of course after a few snorts they put their heads down and came at him. He looked up to see two mares with their noses down to his level coming at him. He reared up in that funny, twisted way that they do. It stopped the mares and it gave him enough time to come down, go BAP BAP nailing them both with his little hornless head, and run under the fence. It was so funny.

Poor little lamb baby! They are so very cute. I am glad your mare was gentle and kind with her. I love those stories. Aren't they pitiful when they get upset? It just wrenches your heart. Those fences are a never ending chore but if we always had them perfect we would miss situations like this.

122. Having been through all of the
possible disasters except volcanic eruptions or tsunami's, I can say with confidence that THEY ALL SUCK.

Stay as safe as you can, go to higher ground when you must (when water is getting close to your waist and swift moving-you have to be able to walk out safely), get an emergency pack ready, baggie important papers, if your higher ground is your roof-make sure you can get on to it with a saw or ax. If you wade through water, watch out for snakes, fire ants, and swift currents. Pray! It may not help, but it certainly won't hurt and can help you feel calm. Calm and clear thinking is what will save you.
