Palin Gives Disastrous Speech At Commercial Real Estate Conference, Calls Obama An "Opium" Addict

http://www.businessinsider.com/sarah-palin-gives-disastrous-speech-at-commercial-real-estate-conference-calls-obama-an-opium-addict-2010-5

This weekend, 2012 Presidential candidate
Sarah Palin delivered a keynote address at the 2010 ICSC RECon conference, a retail real estate conference in Las Vegas.

Of course, whenever a conference has a speaker like this, the draw is the speaker's celebrity power, not their glints of insight about the actual topic at hand.

Still, you kind of expect the speaker to tailor their speech a little bit to the crowd.

Apparently in this case that didn't happen. Mainly she just delivered a stump speech.

According to Ian Ritter, she slammed Obama as an addict of other people's money -- OPM, which she pronounced "opium."

According to the Dirt Lawyer's Blog, her speech went over like a ton of bricks, owing to the fact that she didn't touch on real estate

Speaking of disappointment, let's talk about the keynote address from Sarah Palin. In short, it was a standard stump speech with a few superficial comments about shopping centers and retail real estate. It was awful and a borderline train wreck in my opinion. All Palin had to do was add in a paragraph about the pending disaster of carried interest and she would have not only won over the crowd but gotten significant fundraiser cash from the industry if she runs in 2012. As it stands, I do not know if she knows what carried interest is.

2. Palin knows her 2012 speeches
plus enough catch phrases and buzzwords to reel in the dumbest of the dumb, too dumb to realize she's speaking word salad, too dumb to realize she's not articulate, just insanely babbling.

To expect her to know anything about what's supposed to be the most pressing subject for any of the groups she addresses is to expect too much of her.

I love seeing this stupid woman speaking to captive audiences like this. You know every time she opens her mouth, she's turning off every person with even minimal competence.

What did they expect from her?
You don't hire Zeezo the Clown to discuss market trends and forces. He does his seltzer-down-the-pants schtick, a few balloon animals, and some hokey "magic" tricks. Likewise, Sarah Palin delivers her standard word salad of clichés, applause lines and non sequiturs. You're not expecting a full orchestral version of "Ode to Joy" from Beepo, the horn-honking seal; you shouldn't expect Sarah Palin to give a substantive speech.

If enough of these nitwit trade shows see what a disaster she is as a speaker, maybe they'll stop handing over their members' dues. On the other hand, this is money they can't spend to influence elections. Since they're the type of group that would hire Sarah Palin to deliver their keynote address, I want as little of their influence in an election as possible.

10. She should have known better
She gave the same kind of tone-deaf speech to wine producers, and it went over like a lead balloon. After an experience like that, even the dumbest doorknob would have realized the need to tailor a speech to the audience. But nooooooooo . . . the lesson must have gone right over her head.

"That woman is an idiot!"

11. As long as people keep giving her and her daughter $$$$
She doesn't care how people receive her speeches. She knows she's worshipped by the far right and will always have a paycheck coming in as long as she spouts the standard teabagger script with an outrageous comment or two thrown in to keep her in the media. When she had that famous conversation with her family before quitting as governor it had nothing to do with her someday being president. She doesn't care about that. It was all "Fuck it. Let's cash in!" Sadly it's working for her.

13. Who is the bigger idiot: Palin or the person who hired her expecting something
other than inane bullshit to come out of her mouth? Personally, I'd boycott any professional conference that hired that idiot to speak.

15. Does anyone happen to know why there's a pending disaster in carried interest?
I wouldn't even know what carried interest is except that I skimmed . (It's "a share of the profits of a successful partnership that is paid to the manager of the partnership (a private equity fund or hedge fund) as a form of compensation that is designed as an incentive to the manager to maximize performance of the investment fund.")

Obviously, the corporate media have carried their interest in Palin too far, but the writer is probably referring to the financial meaning.

18. Carried Interest
"The new battle is over a business concept commonly known as “carried interest”. Many investment vehicles, regardless of industry, include a profit split that allows the promoter of the investment to participate in the profits of the investment. This promotional interest in the investment is referred to as the "carried interest". It is intended to align the sponsors’ interests with those of the investors by providing a profit participation in the deal. The investment sponsor often receives both fees for services rendered which are taxed at ordinary income rates, and if they have an interest in the “back-end” of the deal or profits, they receive that profit interest as income that is taxed at a capital gain rate.

"In 2007 Congress became increasingly alarmed at the apparent unfair tax treatment of the hedge funds and other investment managers who were receiving all of their income from sponsored investments as “carried interest” taxed at the beneficial capital gains rate. Little or none of their fees were packaged as ordinary income. To many, this seemed a fundamentally imbalanced result.
As is typical of Congress however, they never seem to be able to fix an identified problem with the accuracy and precision of a scalpel. The current proposed carried interest fix would impact not only the recognized problem, but all transactions with “carried interest” or promote incentives.

"There are fundamental differences between the structure of a real estate investment and investments in other industries. Some real estate transactions need the benefits of the carried interest because of the significant length of time real estate transactions and developments take. Just as capital gains treatment is intended to provide some tax relief for long term investments, the taxation of the carried interest is intended to do the same."

23. Why does no one care?
This woman has given so many speeches like this where, the attendees come away thinking she is retarded and doesn't know anything about the subject at hand.

How many times does this need to happen before the media actually reports it. She is a presidential candidate and she has spent the last year giving multiple speeches which can only be described as train wrecks. At what point are we allowed to say that she is insanely unintelligent and only has an elementary understanding of the English language.

Can you imagine Obama giving a speech like this when he was running for president? Do you have any idea how quick the media would be after him if he gave a speech at a real estate event and didn't mention real estate?

Its shit like this that makes me feel like Sarah Palin can literally do whatever she wants and see no negative backlash. It seems to have become a crime to criticize her in any way.
