A walk on the beach - pics

Oil is seen under the surface of the water along Grand Isle Beach in Grand Isle, Louisiana May 21, 2010. Grand Isle Mayor David Camardelle says the town has closed its beach effective from noon Friday due to the presence of oil on the beach.

Julie Cambre walks past oil that has washed onto a beach in Grand Isle, La. , Thursday, May 20, 2010. Oil from last month's Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico has started drifting ashore along the Louisiana coast.

A bird is seen on the oil-contaminated Grand Isle Beach in Grand Isle, Louisiana May 21, 2010. Grand Isle Mayor David Camardelle said the town has closed its beach effective from noon Friday due to the presence of oil on the beach. For nearly a month, roughly 5,000 barrels (210,000 gallons/795,000 liters) of oil per day have been gushing from BP's broken Deepwater oil well situated in the Gulf of Mexico, in what could be named the worst oil spill in U.S. history.

A dead Northern Gannet covered in oil lies along Grand Isle Beach in Grand Isle, Louisiana May 21, 2010. A month after the well blowout and rig explosion that unleashed the catastrophic spill, sheets of rust-colored heavy oil are starting to clog fragile marshlands on the fringes of the Mississippi Delta, damaging fishing grounds and wildlife. Scientists fear parts of the huge fragmented surface slick will be sucked to the Florida Keys and Cuba by ocean currents.

Specks of oil stick onto the foot of Maggie Grace Hurdle, 8, of Rosedale, Louisiana, as she walks along a beach in Grand Isle, Louisiana May 21, 2010. Grand Isle Mayor David Camardelle says the town has closed its beach effective at noon Friday due to the presence of oil on the beach. A month after the well blowout and rig explosion that unleashed the catastrophic spill, sheets of rust-colored heavy oil are starting to clog fragile marshlands on the fringes of the Mississippi Delta, damaging fishing grounds and wildlife.

VENICE, LA - MAY 17: The letters BP, inscribed in sand and oil by a Greenpeace activist, are shown on a beach at the mouth of the Mississippi River on May 17, 2010 in near Venice, Louisiana. BP announced today that it is successfully siphoning off 1,000 barrels of oil per day from the Deepwater Horizon oil rig that exploded and sank to the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico April 22, killing 11 crew members. The amount of oil escaping from the well is a matter of dispute, making the success of BP's effort difficult for regulators to ascertain.

19. "Dump cartloads of this crap.." An excellent idea! But you know
anyone who did that would be deemed a "terrorist" by the Obama administration.

Meanwhile, BP, the real terrorists, get away scot free. Interesting times... :grr:

28. Too bad we'd get in some trouble
Probably bio-terror charges if we just pelted these scum with their disgusting product. I would quit both of my jobs to sling oil and feces at these sorry beings. And while I'm at it, at every politician I could get near, including our apathetic, lazy, sorry excuse for a leader, President. His response speaks volumes about this situation and where he really stands. Words can't begin to describe how this makes me feel.

Why are you?

It's probably called 'littering' in your jurisdiction. Maybe, on a stretch, public nuisance.

Very minor

9. I posted recently about remembering that too
but at the time I wasn't aware of things like oil spills, I just took it for granted that when you walked at certain beaches (like down near LAX) you would end up with black tar all over your feet.

That and hosing off all of the sand before entering the house.

38. Exactly my first thoughts too.
I remember that so well. We had our 'beach zories' (old term for flipflops for those that don't know) that we used when we went to the beach. Otherwise the bottoms of your feet were black and sticky.

21. Recommended. As time goes on, more and more of these pics
will get into the public domain. BP cannot cover up their crimes forever.

Citizens with their little point-and-shoot digital cameras will be out and about to document the horror.

Meanwhile, the CFM (Corporate Fawning Media) stands immobilized because BP (an arm of the Federal Govt., so it seems) chases them away from the crime scene. Boo Hoo Hoo... x(

29. There is failure on all fronts
From the assholes that created the mess, to the government that wants to suppress the event, and the media which will make you think some two-bit 80s hair-band singer's strokes and brain hemorrhaging are more important than our coastal ecosystems and the health of our citizens and the various species that inhabit the area. I would weep for this country if I even cared anymore, and sadly, I don't. Those in power don't, they never will, and we are too far removed from having any sort of meaningful impact. It is like we've all been collectively dropped on our heads.

25. Besides the hurricane threat, we have our summer rainstorms on the way.
What happens when these heavy metals enter our water tables, fill our aquifers, and cover our veggies? My organic veggie garden is going to be filled with a chemical toxic soup mix. This brings the problem inland and will effect the entire nation who depends on food grown in the South East. Some mercury with your orange juice? Arsenic with your tomato salad? Bio-magnification thru or these chemicals thru the meat supply. The coal fired power companies have done plenty of damage with their spewing of mercury into the atmosphere. Now, we have an oil slick evaporating contaiminants into the atmosphere, only to be deposited later by rain onto the interior parts of our country. Something I see that all the reporters are neglecting to inquire about at all.. mostly due to their lack of knowledge about the evaporation/ rain cycle in the South East (esp if they are used to an achor chair in NY). AND forget about local news reporters.. We are still getting "no oil this weekend, please go and enjoy the beach".. leaving the part about "while you still can" out.

I still can't believe that the Gulf of Mexico has been effectively destroyed (moreso everyday as the oil continues to spill) by a corporation that's very likely going to get away with it by utilizing all the politicians and media power it has purchased / will purchase, and labeling its critics and opponents ignorant / stupid, or "ecoterrorists" or "psycho-environmentalists."

Not to mention the industries and small businesses that relied on this span of water..

Now like Louisiana, Florida, and soon Cuba's shores will be damaged if this stuff continues to spread.
