Texas teacher singles out Latino student during SB-1070 discussion, says Mexicans always ‘expect handouts.’
http://thinkprogress.org/2010/05/17/texas-latino-immigration/

The San Antonio News reports that a Jefferson High School English teacher has been “removed from the classroom” for singling out a Latino student wearing a Mexican soccer jersey and publicly insulting him. According to the student, Augustine Ortiz, what began as a discussion about Arizona’s new immigration law (SB-1070) escalated to an anti-Latino, racist attack:

Teacher's alleged remarks spur removal
(http://www.mysanantonio.com/news/alleged_remarksget_teacher_takenout_of_classroom_93530409.html?showFullArticle=y)

Ortiz, who was wearing a jersey from a Mexican soccer team, said the teacher told him to sit in the front row. She proceeded to single him out repeatedly, Ortiz said, pointing at him as she made comments like, “The Mexicans with their attitudes are the racist ones.” Continuing to point at Ortiz, she allegedly told the class that Mexicans always “expect handouts” and “soon it’s going to be the United States of Mexico,” according to Ortiz.

Another student in the class that day, Reina Mondragon, 18, corroborated Ortiz’s story. “The kind of discussion that we had on Thursday, May 6, wasn’t like the discussions that we normally have,” she said, adding the teacher questioned why documents in the United States frequently are translated into Spanish and whether Mexicans should be allowed to own land in this country.

According to Ortiz, when he went to complain about the incident, the vice prinipal “brushed him off.” Once the school’s principal learned of the incident, administrators removed the teacher and launched an investigation. Ortiz also noted that the English teacher had actually been his favorite instructor. “She actually said we need to stand up for what we believe in,” he said. “And now I’m standing up for what I believe in.”

with the economy or on behalf of the law. They will swear on the grandmother's head that they are not racists.

I just watched a video that came out some time ago about the resurgence of white nationalism under Obama (Except, that's a mischaracterization. The right wing has been fueling this for many years and now that they own the media, they can shoot poison and its rationalizations right into our daily lives at will.)

In any case, there is one part of the video that shows a neo-nazi march. The leader begins to chant: " No n******s, no Jews, the Mexicans must go too!" -- and immediately, you see some younger people rush over to him, take the bullhorn and change the chant to,"USA! USA!".

They don't wear Nazi uniforms any more for the most part and they sound just like ---- Sarah Palin.

3. That's just plain sad.
That teacher should be reprimanded and made to apologize to that student. Kids carry injustices like that inside of them into adulthood if they aren't addressed.

was an errant throwback to earlier times. The GOP is trying to bring those times back. We need to stop them.

7. United States of Mexico
That's one way of looking at it, considering the U.S. invasion of Mexico increased U.S. territory by over 60%.

9. Hey, That was my 3rd Grade Teacher!
Except her name was Mrs. Brown and I was in a state run orphanage and attending a nearby public school. She (probably a Republican) snapped out at the class one day: I'm tired of paying taxes to take care of all you welfare brats!

So...she could've been talking to all the kids on public assistance who weren't from the orphanage......but I don't think so.

She was the only teacher I ever got a spanking from. And once when we had a dentist visit to explain about dental hygiene, he asked us questions about what we had learned. I evidently impressed him, because he smiled at me and commented to Mrs. Brown: Isn't she smart?

She replied quite tersely: She's from "Orphanage X".

Could we retroactively remove her ass from the classroom too?

Bitch.

15. Living well, the best revenge?
Frasier: You know the expression: "Living well is the best revenge."
Niles: It's a wonderful expression. Just don't know how true it is. Don't see it turning up in a lot of opera plots. "Ludwig, maddened by the poisoning of his entire family, wreaks vengeance on Gunther in the third act by living well! Whereupon Woton, upon discovering his deception, wreaks vengeance on Gunther in the third act again by living even better than the Duke!"

14. hmm ... "United States of Mexico" is a standard translation of the actual name of the country
that we usually simply call "Mexico." So claiming that the USA will soon become "the United States of Mexico" either signifies some idiocy like "The USA will soon become Mexico" or else it means that the teacher in San Antonio, Texas, is unconscionably ignorant of the standard full English name of the country neighboring her state

<example from a US embassy page:>

17. Racism against Mexicans and all Latinos and Hispanic
is really rising. On Cinco de Mayo, 5 white high school students in Morgan Hill, CA deliberately wore tee shirts depicting the American flag prominently and had anti-immigration slogans. Obviously trying to provoke a confrontation and intimidate immigrant students.

As a person of color, I've heard some folks say nasty, racist things and then sneer, "Now don't get mad." And since Mr. Obama has been in office, this crap gets worse.

These racists aren't even conscious that it might be hurtful to hear. These folks are that devoid of empathy when it comes to people of color. And it is always in the guise of "teaching" you something.

And what is truly awful is that there are even some from the dominant culture that will say, "Now come on, we voted in Obama. Racism doesn't exist any more."

If there is one thing that really gets me is that how can these folks say such a thing when there are incidents like this one and the passage of terrible bills as the ones in Arizona.

Are they that damned ignorant and blind? Really?
