Kagan's friends: She's not gay...
Elena Kagan is not a lesbian, one of her best friends told POLITICO Tuesday night, responding to persistent rumors and innuendo about the Supreme Court nominee’s personal life.

“I’ve known her for most of her adult life and I know she’s straight,” said Sarah Walzer, Kagan’s roommate in law school and a close friend since then. “She dated men when we were in law school, we talked about men -- who in our class was cute, who she would like to date, all of those things. She definitely dated when she was in D.C. after law school, when she was in Chicago – and she just didn’t find the right person.”

Walzer, half amused and half appalled to be discussing her friend’s sexual orientation, agreed to be interviewed after Kagan’s supporters decided they should tactfully put an end to the rumor, which White House officials had already tried to squelch in background interviews with reporters. She said she decided to talk to POLITICO because the discussion of Kagan’s personal life has become a “distraction.”

“It’s taking away from substantive discussion of the issues from a really substantive person who deserves to be given the opportunity to address the substantive issues,” she said.

Another friend, former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer, a member of Kagan’s social circle at Princeton University, wanted to make the same point as Walzer. “I did not go out with her, but other guys did,” he said in an email Tuesday night. “I don't think it is my place to say more.”

2. Seriously, why do we care if she is gay or not? I know I don't, as long as she brings
a non partisan perspective to the court. And that goes for anyone in a public position.

6. it's not, but why act like it's something negative, and this points more to her being gay
they bring up her dating in the old days. consider the times. many gays dated those of the opposite sex.

Michael Huffington married Arianna and had kids.

7. I agree...
But this seems to be the favored "attack" by the right. Since it was announced, they've demanded to know if she's gay. Personally I don't think it's anyone's business but hers. And if SHE wants to tell us, then fine, otherwise leave it alone.

In the future can we start asking straight men if they've ever frequented a prostitute, or if they've cheated on their wives, or if they've ever had a "luggage boy". If not, then back off this woman and leave her alone with respect to her PERSONAL life.

Her positions are all that should matter. But of course with the right, it's always about guns, gays, and immigrants. And the gay envelope is the one they're pushing right now. Anything to distract from real issues.

I find it completely repulsive.

10. You're right..
frequenting prostitutes and cheating is wrong. They were bad examples. I was trying to think of personal issues, and trying to compare and did a very poor job.

18. Because the Republicans
care so much and will, in their blind and relentless opposition to any Obama candidate, use anything they think will have some leverage, innuendo or smear factor with the public, amplified by all their corporate propagandists in the media (Limbaugh/Beck/O'Reilly/Hannity, etal.) to say nothing of influencing those who will actually confirm. Of course you are right. It shouldn't make any difference.

3. McGreevey was married twice with kids
especially in those days there are many gays who dated someone of the opposite sex .

but how about Kagan's partner we have heard about ?

and all this denial stuff just makes it seem like it's something negative.

and Spitzer's response seem to say he knows she is gay . "i don't think it is my place to say more". so it's not his place to say yeah, she dated guys back then for obvious reasons. but she is a lesbian ?

9. She's not gay...she's
bisexual! The horror of it all!

Seriously, I don't know what she is. I really don't care either. It is up to her to tell us. Are all unmarried men and women going to be subjected to this in politics? What if someone was god forbid it, asexual???? Do people have to be married to enter the political realm? It is not the same as "owning" your race as some on DU have said. You don't need to tell anyone your color. Or usually your age. Most times your sex (though that is another issue). I just don't care. Now her judicial philosophy, I DO care about.

what are we going to discuss now?

I actually have a close female relative who is nearly 50 and still a virgin as far as I know. Nobody believes that either.

19. Why do people think that all women who are not married are
Edited on Wed May-12-10 02:12 AM by JDPriestly
either promiscuous or gay? Stereotyping. Male chauvinism. Stupid. What difference does it make anyway? After all, if a guy like Roberts can serve on the Court without all these questions? He married very late in life. It's his business. It's her business. Doesn't mean they are gay.
