I'm betting that the attempted bombing in TImes Square
was the work of a RushBeck moron.
It sure knocked the BP/Haliburton massive leak off the headlines for now.

4. Does propane have more energy per lb than
other things like the ammonium nitrate and an oil mixture like what was used in ok city.

Whether we'll ever know for sure what happened last night due to this thing not blowing up or not the feds will know all they need to know. I'm sure much evidence is present and the perpetrators will be found out. My suspicion is that the hate mongers, like rush, beck and fox noise in general are to blame

14. You can buy it by the 20 lb canisters here at most all the ezmarts, git-n-go's etc
I'm not sure how they expected to mix it with air to get it to do much more than burn, maybe a big fireball was what they were after, I don't know. But I do know you have to have the proper mixture of a gas that burns with oxygen to make it go boom. Sounds like one of 'the dicks' jobs where someone didn't quite think this thing through. After all the dicks company, halliburton is fixing to be in a world of shit and they desperately need something to knock them off the front page so they can do their dealings under the cloak of darkness and this seems to maybe have accomplished that. Remember the anthrax shortly after 911, same thing they needed a diversion. More than likely there was never any will to blow up times square but to only make it look like they were for a smoke and mirrors show.

32. Mythbusters just did a show about exploding propane tanks
Edited on Sun May-02-10 08:01 PM by csziggy
The actual myth was that a propane tank the size used for most BBQ grills would take off like a rocket if in a shed or garage that caught fire. What they Mythbusters found our was that if heated sufficiently in a fire, the tanks simply release the propane from their pressure release valves, making a little blow torch effect.

BUT if the pressure release valve was sabotaged, the tanks exploded spectacularly, throwing shrapnel of the parts of the tank for long distances.

To end up with a rocket effect, they had to defeat the pressure release valve and weaken the bottom of the tank so the pressure would blow out in a small area and propel the tank the way a rocket does.

This makes me think that the bomber wannabee could be a teabagger who watched too much TV and thought it would be simple, not realizing that the Mythbusters are not going to demostrate all the ways that they use to get the explosions they show on TV.

11. That also crossed my mind
Joe Scum and Mika mouse will still manage to have their planned hate fest over the dinner. What's really missing from the news all of yesterday and up to now is a discussion on what may well be Obama's best speech to date - the graduation address from U Michigan on what government is all about.

Obama left the room last night just before the entertainment - I suspect that they were briefing both OMan and Bloomberg. It would explain his tone.

7. We'll Know In Due Time...
As one whose been in that area many times, I'm amazed the guy found a parking spot.

Just as I was quick to say "wait and see" when faux noise or the right wing hate spewers and media scream "A-rab" at any attack, I'm going to say the same thing about automatically associating teabaggers and right wing whackos with this episode. I have faith in the NYPD and FBI to get some information out and I am sure we'll have a name or names in the next day or so. Let's hold fire until that point and be grateful this thing fizzled as had it exploded the carnage would have been devestating.

One thing that did strike me about this...a couple days ago they reran the Mythbusters episode about blowing up propane tanks...unless the tank it altered, there's a safety valve that would release the pressure and prevent a store bought cannister from exploding. It would have to be modified and the safety disabled for it to be lethal. Just found the timing very curious...

:hi:

15. Burn Yes, Explode No
If the safety value went, the gas would escape the cannister faster than pressure could build to create an explosion. The car may have caught on fire but without the cannisters exploding under pressure it wouldn't create the massive explosion that would create the type of carnage I'm hearing the corporate media already wringing their hands about.

16. any burnable gas will explode at the right mixture with oxygen
Propane does and has killed many in home explosions. I knew a family that were killed that way. The son, my friend, got up early and flipped on a switch for the porch light and KaBoom, he was the only one to survive the blast because it blew him out into the yard. I know of another house that no one was injured in but the right mixture of natural gas and oxygen and something ignited it and it went boom, This one didn't burn though but it just pretty much leveled the house, the roof went straight up and the walls straight out. the roof fell back down on the floor walls were in the yard. Both looked like a bomb had gone off inside the house. These are only two that I know of but I've read back through the years of many more. This propane could have been a bomb with the right mixture of oxygen.

18. Of course it was....
because nobody else would ever perpetrate a terrorist attack in NYC.

Oh, wait.....

Sorry, this is the first thread I read here this morning, and it pisses me off. There was almost a car bomb explosion in Times Square. We are lucky nobody was hurt. I hope the police do their job and find the perpetrators and arrest them. Whatever their motivations are... it doesn't matter. They almost killed a bunch of New Yorkers, and they need to be arrested for their actions.

For those not in NYC, it's easy to point fingers and speculate, but for those of us who live and work here, it's a serious problem.

19. Here's what they are saying in freeperville
Some of their random comments (and, btw, THEY agree that importasnt news is being knocked off the headlines):

________________________________________________________________________

At least the bomb didn't explode. If it did, it would have been the first successful domestic terrorist attack in the United States. Obama would have then fingered the failed car bomb attack to the patriot militias and given a casus belli to attack them and declare nationwide martial law.

Fox is hinting at Islamic Terrorists as the possible group behind the bomb.

I tend to think it was either an anarchist, a commie/pinko type, or an illegal alien Yesterday was, after all, May Day, when all the leftist whacko groups come out of the woodwork to wreak havoc. Or it could be an enviroweeny, although I tend toward a Bill Ayers type (where was Bill yesterday?). Hopefully, we will find out. As it happened in Times Square in NY, that makes me doubt it was a militia type. They traditionally dont hang out in NY. It could be a Muzzie terrorist type, as there are plenty of them in NY and NJ, however, they are saying the job was amateurish, which makes me still think it was some pinko type.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I DO NOT recall any car bombs
either set or detonated during the BUSH Administration.
I also DO NOT recall Islamic murders on U.S. Military Bases while the BUSH was in charge.
Car Bombs? This is a classic middle east method of attack and it looks like it may soon become common place in our own USA thanks to a weak-ass CIC and his Secretary of H.S.

I wouldnt be surprised if it were an obambi supporter. Look for more of this crap to happen. Too many accidents occuring, Refinery, coal mine, oil platform.

On May Day, when all the commies and anarchists come out, and all the illegal aliens are marching all over the U.S. Seems like an odd day for Muzzies to set a car bomb. I go with my radicals theory. The timing is not coincidental to the events of the day, IMO.

Interesting how this occurs on the same day that the National Enquirers Obama Cheating Scandal hits the stands?!

21. There are basically three possibilities
1) International Islamist terrorist.

2) Domestic Right Wing terrorist.

3) Domestic Islamist terrorist.

Of the three, I would say it is more likely to be domestic in nature. International Terrorists have historically gone for the "big event" as opposed to something smaller. Domestic Terrorists have historically used smaller devices, McVeigh being the exception. You hear about right wing terrorists being arrested with pipe bombs and other explosives. Eric Robert Rudolph is more of an example of the typical right wing bomber. He used smaller explosives and targeted abortion clinics, gay bars, and the Olympics. Had this device actually exploded, from the description, it would have been localized and would not have caused any dramatic structural damage, like McVeigh's device did.

I'll admit that the third possibility could be what happened here, too and given the nature of these types of attacks, I would not rule out attack from somebody like Major Nidal Hasan.

34. idiots. ok, I get the finger-pointing at the left
we're doing the same pointing fingers at the right. Understandable, but the idea of an Obama supporter doing it seems really stupid to me - what would be the point?

anyway, this one is the one that really gets me:

"If it did, it would have been the first successful domestic terrorist attack in the United States."

Really? What about McVeigh and the OK City bombing? Convenient for them to forget that one, eh?

36. I'd rather not point fingers with so few facts
We know nothing about the attacker's motives yet--not enough to make assumptions about whether or not they are political, or even rational.

You're right about the wingnuts' proclivity for convenient memory loss. But if they can forget 9/11 happened on Bush's watch, then forgetting other inconvenient facts is all downhill from there. :)

38. Just to be clear
I wasn't suggesting that you, specifically, were pointing fingers.

But there have been a lot of DUers suggesting that it was probably someone from the right-wing.

I've been guilty of thinking the same.

However, if the investigation shows otherwise, I have no problem accepting that.

29. What I find strange is that it would appear the culprit wanted the bomb found
before it exploded because it was so damned obvious that the car was suspicious. A thread I started about this got kicked to the dudgeon and perhaps deservedly so - something doesn't smell right but I'm not wedded to the notion that this was staged to deflect attention. Most likely it is just highly coincidental that something so dramatic just happened to coincide with the largest manmade environmental disaster in the US.

31. Well that's an interesting tidbit. How fortunate then didn't explode and that
forensics have an intact vehicle, how fortunate that there was no loss of life.

I am not one to jump on conspiracy bandwagons but the financial crisis, the goldman sachs revelations etc, brought home to me that the powers that be are not simply greed-ridden a**holes but outright criminals who will stop at nothing to make a buck. Any assumption that there is any sense of morality at the upper echelons of money and power is a complete illusion.

35. I thought about this also...
Setting fireworks off inside the SUV?? Why would he do that? Either one of two reasons, I suspect.
Either to let people know something is happening so they can get away? Or either to get people's attention and draw a large crowd around the vehicle? I tend to think it may be the latter. Is this the work of only one person? There could be more. I think maybe the news media reported some things, CNN, that the FBI may have wanted a little more time on? When one of the CNN folks was telling the latest details about the SUV being traced to an auto body shop in Connecticut, the sound was replaced with a long whistling alarm sound. They explained it as "technical" difficulties.
