Sue Lowden Finally Backs Off “Chickens For Checkups” Barter Policy
Breaking: Sue Lowden Finally Backs Off “Chickens For Checkups” Barter Policy
Greg Sargent

It took around two weeks and a good deal of national ridicule, but Nevada GOP Senate candidate Sue Lowden has finally backed off of her apparent advocacy for a “chickens for checkups” barter policy to bring down health care costs.

In an interview with a local station in Nevada today, Lowden clarified her original comments, claiming she’d been taken out of context. Lowden added she had merely made a “casual statement” designed to describe an ongoing reality, and hadn’t intended to offer a policy prescription.

“They took it way out of context,” Lowden said in the interview, blaming Harry Reid’s campaign tracker for plucking the quote out of an hour-long conversation about multiple topics.

“The truth of the matter is there is bartering going on in this state and in the country,” Lowden said. “It has been going on for years.” She added she had merely made “a casual statement talking about the reality of what’s going on.” Audio here.

1. So she isn't backing off it.
She still wants people to barter with their doctor. If not chickens - sheep?

3. No, the reality of what's going on is that people don't have access to health care
or are going broke trying to pay for it.

THAT is the reality of what's going on.

5. Bartering is only permitted when taxes are paid on the transactions...
If you offered 200 chickens to a doctor for a physical you would also have to send 20 chickens, or roughly 10%, to the state for state sales tax. And at the end of the year any gains in bartering would have to be reported to the IRS, and if you owed them, then you would have to send them chickens by April 15, 2011. I believe it would be hard to cram a bunch of chickens in a mailbox, so don't wait until midnight to send them to the IRS. Go early so you can ship your chicken tax payment in a regular shipping box. The IRS only accepts live chickens for payments so make sure there are holes in the box so the chickens can breathe. I hope this helps...

6. Hey doc, can I trade you a side of beef for ACL surgery?
Edited on Tue Apr-27-10 05:53 PM by Quantess
I know ACL surgery usually costs $30,000 to $50,000.... but it's grass fed beef.

No? How about I fix your wagon wheel and knit you a sweater, then?

9. She's so full of it...
...in another recent interview, she actually said that bartering for health care can help keep the cost down.

Now maybe she wasn't talking about policy when she said that. But then again, she is a politician running for office and we sort of expect people in that position to talk about policy, right? Why else do we want to listen to what they have to say?

She is full of it.

11. Oh, it was just a "casual statement"
That she saw fit to repeat over and over again, and even now she's sort of standing by it. I don't think there's any dispute that there is a barter economy going on in the country; not everyone pays cash for everything. But the idea that you could barter payment of a $20,000 medical procedure is just ludicrous, but Lowden doesn't seem to know this.

16. That is not backing off, that is claiming victimhood...GOP'ers are good at it.
Backing off the statement would be something like, "Yes I can see why that might be considered a silly statement." or simply saying, "I wish I hadn't said that but in the moment I thought it would make a point and I was wrong."

What the idiot is doing is simply what I have seen many GOP politicians and some Democratic ones too. She is trying to distance herself from the damage her idiotic statement has caused her while not actually admitting she said anything stupid. However, like others here have said, we won't let this die. It will fade, but it is part of political lore just like with Quayle misspelled Potato, and Reagan said Ketchup was a vegetable.
