Dear Arizona Local Newspaper Editor
I have followed with interest recent news indicating that Arizona police may arrest people they suspect of being non-citizens. After diligently searching Arizona state websites for information, I unfortunately find that I am still uncertain about what documentation my family and I might need to travel safely to an Arizona tourist destination without risking an extensive stay in one of the many fine local jails in the state

Guidance would be helpful. Members of my immediate family have varying skin hues and facial features, and some of them speak very fluent Spanish. Should we all obtain Federal passports before planning any future visits to Arizona? If we decide not bring passports, what special step should I take to safeguard the civil rights of my darker and/or Spanish speaking family members, in the event that our car is stopped by police for a minor traffic infraction, such as a burnt-out tail-light? Similarly, what special steps should I take to protect from unnecessary and humiliating incarceration a very elderly relative, who was born at home when there was very little money, and whose primary documentation (though entirely legitimate) looks odd to many modern eyes?

I have enjoyed vacationing in Arizona in the past, but until I receive clear and legally definitive answers to my questions, I am afraid that I will be forced to minimize my time in your state

2. It's a template. I'll rework it completely two or three times and mail out
several things somewhat like it to a few papers, when I'll got the wording just right

3. As a resident of Arizona

I am embarrassed again. (Kyl, McCain, Arpaio) The way I understand this law is that the police can pull anyone, at any time over to make sure they are American. The police can use this new law to roust people for any reason. It's Nazi Germany. There's already thousands of Border Patrol, Highway Patrol, Minutemen around here. It's not a correct law. Fuck!!
The loss in revenue to the state because of this will hurt. The cost of lawsuits over this will hurt.

6. You're so right about the loss of revenue.
I'm just a short jaunt away over in California. We come to Arizona all the time to hike and camp. I really don't see us doing that right now. And it's a damn shame, too. You all have the Grand Canyon and Sedona. Two of my more favorite places on Earth!

8. If MLB moves the all-star game, it would be a major hit

I hope there will be enough public outcry and a boycott by minority players that the site gets moved out of AZ.

5. I love it. How about this take?
Dear Arizona Local Newspaper Editor,

I have followed with interest recent news indicating that Arizona police may arrest people they suspect of being non-citizens. After diligently searching Arizona state websites for information, I unfortunately find that I am still uncertain about what documentation my family and I might need to travel safely to an Arizona tourist destination without risking an extensive stay in one of the many fine local jails in the state

Guidance would be helpful. Members of my immediate family have varying skin hues and facial features, and some of them speak very fluent languages other than English. Should we all obtain Federal passports before planning any future visits to Arizona? If we decide not bring passports, what special step should I take to safeguard the civil rights of my darker and/or foreign speaking family members, in the event that our car is stopped by police for a minor traffic infraction, such as a burnt-out tail-light? What are the parameters being used in stopping people. For example, if my husband and I speak some German to one another, would that be alright under Arizona law? How about French? Do I need to get special papers to prove that I was born inside the borders of the United States to a mother who is also a natural-born citizen? What if my mother was adopted? Is there any special provision we need to be aware of?

I have enjoyed vacationing in Arizona in the past, but until I receive clear and legally definitive answers to my questions, I am afraid that I will be forced to minimize my time in your state

7. The trick is to devise a nice grab bag of soundbites -- and then
throw two or three in each of several letters. It's a numbers game, and no one letter needs to carry the whole load
