11. Well.. that little joke made me laugh, I'll admit..
I'm a bit of a meteorological nerd, so I've been reading up.. and from what I've read so far, Eyjafjallajökull's recent rumblings aren't expected to have a major impact on global weather..

Still. like anything on the planet, I guess that can be subject to change.. time will tell, won't it..

16. I thought it was funny. What's wrong with you?
Why are you so sensitive and all gloom and doom a bout it? It is what it is, a big cloud of ashes covering parts of the earth and blocking some of that global warming sunlight. I would think that environmentalists would have cause to celebrate, after all this will slow the warming of the earths temperature. I don't think the world is going to end because of this, other volcanoes have erupted in the past (Alaska, recently) and we'll all get through this. The cloud will eventually dissipate and we'll all be able to breath again. You might maybe want to take a break from some of those history channel gloom and doom shows, cause I think you might be taking them too seriously. Besides, it's an act of nature, so far no one has died from it and there's not one damn thing anyone can do about it anyway. So we might as well lighten up about it and relax.

17. It won't "slow" the warming of the earth's atmosphere per se,
but will merely MASK IT temporarily, lulling the clueless and deniers into even greater smugness and complacency.

23. Well if it goes on for a prolonged period of time, I would think it would eventually have an impact
on global temperatures. Only time will tell, so we can either use this as an opportunity to become more innovative in regards to modern transportation or we can run around crying that the sky is falling and take offense when some one makes a pretty funny joke.

8. This spreading and potentially long term problem has me wondering.
Edited on Sun Apr-18-10 11:51 AM by FightingIrish
If transcontinental jet transportation is shut down or severely reduced, what will we do to get from here to there. Solar powered airships are a possibility. I wonder if old fashioned reciprocating engine airliners could be flown safely since they fly at lower speeds and rely on less airflow through their engines. While we take a technological step backwards, we could even go back to treating passengers like guests instead of cargo.

18. In all probability...ships.
A lot will depend on how long this lasts. If this turns into a multi-year eruption as this volcano has done in the past, alternatives will need to be found. If this triggers an eruption of the much larger neighboring Katla volcano, as the last three eruptions of THIS volcano have done, we may have no choice.

One important thing to keep in mind is that the world DOES have a fairly large fleet of cruise ships capable of taking the place of the airliners. Nearly all of these ships are currently dedicated to recreational cruising, but it's realistic to think that a large percentage of them will be repurposed for trans-Atlantic passenger traffic if the airlines go away and the market becomes viable again.

It's not a fast way to travel though. Modern cruise ships can make the crossing in about 6 days, which is a far cry from an 8 hour flight.

The rest of us have to understand that the days of cheap mass air travel will soon be over, anyway. And maybe it's better to be in less of a hurry and to take more time...

Interesting that Iceland is almost completely untouched.

I wonder how far the ash will spread.

It's because the jet stream and prevailing winds move from west to east.

20. well on the bright side
that is only 3 days so it seems to be dispersing quickly, and most of the red areas are over the ocean or move through an area in a matter of hours.

I don't want to make light of this. It is disturbing to see that many people affected by something as hazardous as that ash cloud.

25. I feel bad for all the livestock left out in the fields near the volcano.
Pictures I saw showed hundreds of horses and cows standing in the mud and haze. It would be really difficult to get to them with enough clean water and food, I wonder how many will die. :-(

36. A major problem with animals is the high fluoride content of the ash, which is poisonous
Farmers in affected areas are trying to keep their animals off ash-covered vegetation because it would poison them. This has happened with other eruptions in the past, for example with Iceland's Hekla, a larger volcano which erupted ash with a 3-fold higher fluoride concentration. There were massive livestock die-offs due to fluroide poisoning at that time.

33. k&r -- what a tiny vulnerable planet we are on (a nuke plume would irradiate us all
just like this

this shows how stuff really blows globally

one nuke plant spews radiation and it blows all over.

Chernobyl ash/radiation blew globally and landed in New England

35. Spectacular. You can see how eventually that band will reach ALL AROUND THE WORLD
There is going to be a band around the world if the eruption keeps going as it did for over a year when this volcano erupted the last time 200 years ago. Looks to me like eventually there will be some amount of ash cloud all around the world, including over the US. By the time it reaches the US, the larger particles should have dropped out, but the finest ones will probably still be aloft. How will that affect jet engines? Will the layer be sufficiently sharply stratified by then that planes can avoid the ash layer in the atmosphere?

And HOW WILL THIS AFFECT THE WEATHER? Will we have an unseasonably cold summer that could affect agriculture?
