Doomsday shelter currently selling bunker space

(PhysOrg.com) -- California-based company Vivos is providing you and about 4,000 other people the chance to survive the end of the world. The company plans to build a network of 20 shelters near most major cities of the US. Each 20,000-square-foot shelter, which can hold up to 200 people, would be located about five stories underground with walls two to three feet thick. The shelters would be stocked with a year’s supply of “gourmet foods,” as well as medical and dental centers and - as seen in the video below - flat-screen TVs.

Each shelter costs about $10 million to build, and Vivos is selling space in the price range of about $50,000 per person. So far, about 1,000 applications have been received for space in the shelters.

Once a certain number of applications have been received and candidates selected for a shelter location, Vivos will begin construction of the shelter. When completed, ownership will be turned over to the Vivos Owners’ Association, where the owners would be responsible for security and maintenance, contributing their own skills and expertise to ensure the long-term survival of the shelter. Vivos hopes to complete construction and commissioning of the nationwide network by December 21, 2012

4. This reminds me of the prolferation of shelters in the late '50s and early '60s.
Every year our family went to the state fair we'd see several different models of bunkers for sale.

7. Yep -
at least in those 'fallout' shelters they recommended keeping a super-economy sized bottle of tranquilizers to keep people calm.

5. Shared space with 200 people 5 stories underground sounds like hell.
For $50,000 wouldn't you better off building your own backyard bunker?

8. Your only problem in the event of Doomsday is actually getting to the shelter...
and getting the people inside to open the door and let one person in a mob of a thousand in.

9. Thank you very much for your check in the amount of $50,000!
We will be in touch with you when the building process is complete. As you will understand, the location of this site must be kept absolutely confidential, so purchasers will not be able to see the location of the structure until is is complete and ownership is vested in the owners.

11. If it's a doomsday shelter, why have t.v. screens? Who
would be able to broadcast from the outside if it's the end of civilization???

13. DVD's. But will there be power to run the things?
With the power grid shut down, they'll have to run on generators. Which require gasoline or diesel. Have they got enough of that to keep the lights on and the air recirculating? And won't they need vents for exhaust? And what about sewage for 200 people for a year? The questions go on and on and on.

14. Well, if it's only the end of civilization, then Faux News will be broadcasting -- cablecasting.
After all, civilization is irrelevant to them. ;-)

16. Sounds like a rather well-appointed Hellhole
When the end of the world comes, that's the LAST place I'd want to be. Probably full of Fundies, weirdo survivalists and people who like Square Dancing.
