1. He was first appointed by Nixon to Federal Appeals Court.
He is a Republican...and yet considered the most Liberal Justice...What doers that tell us about the direction of America?

Albeit it was right after a big fight over Rehnquist becoming Chief Justice, no one wanted another SCOTUS fight so soon. Breyer and Ginsberg both got north of 90 votes IIRC. Times certainly do change.
