1. PLEASE do this for a MAJOR Democratic Constituency.
We teachers work VERY hard for your kids every day. This bill is a vicious assault on public school teachers.

Google "Florida teacher merit pay bill" if you want more information. If a Republican vetoes this Republican bill there will be an internecine war within the Florida Republican Party. IF this bill is vetoed it helps all Dems as Florida is a major state controlled by the Rs.

9. Can you tell us what this bill is?
You elude that it is something regarding teachers, but don't say explicitly what it is. I don't live in Florida, so it's not on my radar.

10. This would tie over 50% of a teacher's evaluation to standardized test scores.
This would put ALL new teachers hired after July 1, 2010 on annual contracts.

This would allow ANY teacher to be fired, and your certificate REVOKED if they didn't show learning gains on standardized test scores 4 out of every 5 years. So you are screwed if you teach children in schools with high needs.

No cost of living raises. Only raises based on test scores.

This would take away pay that a teacher gets for having an advanced degree (even if in field).

This would take away pay from those who earn the prestigious National Board Certification.

Soldiers or new mothers on leave would have a difficult time of returning to the profession.

13. From another post...
Already approved by the Senate, the legislation now rests with Crist, who first said he supported it but has been hinting that he may now use his veto because it is so unpopular.

Teachers, parents and students have been loudly protesting the legislation, which, if it becomes law, would:

*Make Florida the first state to eliminate tenure for new teachers, putting them all on one-year contracts for the first five years.

*Eliminate class experience and advanced degrees (in most cases) as factors in teacher evaluations and pay increases.

*Require that at least 50 percent of a teacher’s evaluation, and pay increases, be based on standardized test scores. Test experts say this method is faulty because teachers can’t control every factor that affects the test-taking process.

*Require the creation of a slew of new standardized tests for every subject, in every grade that is not already assessed. This must come as good news to companies that create tests and that prepare students for taking tests. There could be a lot of new business for them in Florida
