29. Well, if you buy into the "clean coal" bullshit, that's pretty much the only way to do it.
The only other option the energy corporations are offering is this:

If you're a working-class person in Appalachia, you can't win. Either you're offered an old-school mining job underground (with all the poison and danger that entails) or else the hillside you grew up on will be destroyed as thoroughly as in the picture, and you know any job you MIGHT be offered will be fleeting (because really, all the jobs in mountaintop removal mining are very short-term temp jobs, because when it comes to taking coal out, it's very EFFICIENT. And you know that the right wing values EFFICIENCY above all else) and if you still live in the vicinity (you'll never make enough to move out), the toxic tailings in your water will cause serious defects in your children and grandchildren.

8. Yes, unfortunately
I can only hope there will be a THOROUGH and IMPARTIAL investigation into what led to this tragedy. Whenever the name Massey is involved, I have my doubts whether we will have either.

11. Kicking because miners' lives DO matter
I'm holding out hope for the 21 still missing, and my heart goes out to the families of those who perished or were injured. It's going to be a long night in the coal fields tonight.

21. I can only hope that there will be consequences
now that we have a new administration. I hope so for the miners' sake. The fact that these unsafe conditions were allowed to continue since the last tragedy does not bode well, however.:(

Lots of violations this year as well - even last week.
Let's hope Obama takes better care of them.

31. the problem is the coal companies have intentionally created an MSHA backlog
after the Sago incident, they began appealing endlessly and have blocked all efforts at safety enforcement at the national level

don't expect any consequences at the state level. even most wv democrats have taken the side of the coal companies and have been attacking the obama administration nonstop for the past year

32. I saw some of the local politicians on a live press
conference on Larry King Live at midnight eastern last night. I don't know anything about wv politics, but I think they were local congress people and even a senator?... Anyway, they seemed very ill at ease to me, and full of platitudes. They also seemed to be trying to smooth over safety concerns, although I realize that now is not the time to be throwing stones. I'm appalled that even the Dems are not standing up.
