Girl Arrested for Doodling Sues New York City
Edited on Sat Apr-03-10 12:47 PM by tblue37
Remember the 12-year-old girl who was arrested and led from school in handcuffs for doodling on a desk with erasable marker? Well, maybe the fact that she is suing the city of New York for $1 million will make teachers, administrators, and cops think twice before going all Gestapo on kids who commit minor infractions in school.

Gonzalez describes the ordeal as traumatizing and excessive, saying that after her Spanish teacher caught her doodling on her desk with erasable green marker, she was "physically dragged by a teacher and an assistant principal" to the dean's office, where school safety officials searched her by placing "their hands inside the rear and front pockets of her jeans." Police were then summoned to arrest her.

Gonzalez told the Daily News she broke down as she was led out of her school in handcuffs. "I started crying, like, a lot," said said. "I made two little doodles. ... It could be easily erased. To put handcuffs on me is unnecessary."

The legal papers filed by Rosenthal said Comacho was not permitted to accompany her daughter to the precinct and was instead told to go home and wait for a call. The documents also said that Gonzalez was detained in "an enclosed room" at the precinct and handcuffed to a pole for more than two hours <emphasis added>.

In February, New York City officials acknowledged Gonzalez's arrest was a mistake, with a City Education spokesman saying, "Based on what we've seen so far, this shouldn't have happened." Police spokesman Paul Browne told the Daily News that officers should have used better judgment after being called by the school.<SNIP>

1. The only time I have ever seen police use better judgement was on
TV when a reporter was watching and recording their every move.

14. I don't
I hope the people responsible for these horrendous actions are fired but I don't want to see education dollars going to pay for anything other than education. Our schools are in bad enough shape without draining them of much needed funds

them in a big way.

Some people need to get a clue-trigger a bit more subtle than a 2 by 4, but when that's the only trigger that works, it has to be the 2 by 4.

8. Well, they are suing on her behalf. She is the injured party.
I don't care who is filing the ppers--I'm just glad they are making a stink abou what was done to her, especially because of the way she was treated when they got the poor kid down to he station. I'm surprised they didn't take the opportunity to tase her.

10. On the bright side, experience with the establishment's petty tyrants has radicalized more than one
kid

Lots of people I knew learned definitively in middle school and high school that the folks-in-charge weren't necessarily friendly, fair, rational, or honest

12. Yep. They have potentially created the next great civil rights activist with this.
They certainly haven't created a good, obedient little drone.

Actions have consequences.

19. We are all aware that the police have better things to do.
I'm sure that while the girl was being arrested, someone else's call to police went unanswered in NYC.
