It's Not Just This Pope
Ratzinger is in the thick of this mess and the focus is deservedly on him. However, his predecessor, the one they're trying to make into a saint, did nothing to help or save children either.

all of whom insisted church officials from priests on up were exempt from civil law.

2. It's not like we didn't know all this before the guy was ever chosen as pope.
I remember an NPR story about various New Englanders who had been affected by the scandal several years ago relucantly accepting the guy's apology.
