I don't think a lot of people will be interested in Peak Oil and EROI until we are a little deeper down the slippery slope to come.

Just say two words: "Peak oil."

People just don't want to hear it.

But there's that point downslope you mention, when people get interested. My guess: when we start getting lines at the gas station.

They'll be able to rationalize all the other symptoms - higher prices, spotty food supplies, more unemployment, etc. But keeping the automobile fed, that'll be the attention-getter!

3. Boy have you ever NAILED IT! Thank you! My 'I told you so!' day is coming and

sooner than any are willing to consider. And this is why it is already too late to fix the problem. If we had listened to Jimmy Carter, who tried to warn us, we would be in good shape. But instead we'll fly right off the cliff at high speed. Anything to keep up business as usual for as long as possible. Problem with that, besides the obvious, is that our children will deal with the problem just as they are being handed the debt from our fast-living ways.

4. Yeah ...

and we shouldn't mention that oil is now the very lifeblood of what we call modern life.

People usually think of fuels, gasoline, heating, etc. But no! Plastics, fertilizers, weed killers, pharmaceuticals, etc. Then, you include the fossil fuel related aspects of production, shipping, selling ... well, it is all directly related and price and availability are factors.

This plays strongly into the current politics we are seeing. When one speculates on the outcome, it foreshadows a much different future and who receives and retains the modern benefits of the dwindling supply will depend on status and financial means. That may be why we are seeing the building of a great divide and less concern about certain issues.

That's not just idle speculation and the big techno fix for is more of a belief system at this stage and about thirty-years too late.

6. Well, thank you, too.

I have been following this for a while, but a friend of mine has made it a hobby and we talk about it frequently. We go over stats and discuss how we are going to cope with the transition/shift. At first, it is very troubling and sobering, but we are the type that would rather know than live in a bubble of delusion and be caught off-guard without a clue.

Mind you, we read articles and stats from various sources and apply some critical thinking to it. There are many sources, but I think people can find them easily themselves IF, (big if) they want to know.

Anyway, I think you and I know that "getting it" is not a badge of joy or something to gloat about. The implications and gravity of this are significant enough to be both frightening and humbling. It is easy to envy those who haven't a clue, yet, the not having a clue only contributes to the negatives on how this plays out.
