Teacher Jaimie Escalante has died
Legendary Garfield High School math teacher Jaime Escalante, who was immortalized in the film "Stand and Deliver," died Tuesday afternoon after battling cancer.

Escalante died at 2:27 p.m. at the home of his son, Jaime Jr., in Roseville, Calif., said actor Edward James Olmos, who portrayed Escalante in the film.

4. Stand and Deliver was a very good movie.
Worth seeing if you haven't yet. According to Escalante it was very accurate.

RIP

8. I met the man.
We had a chat.

About five years ago at an event at the University of the Pacific he was a key speaker or something, I'm sorry to say I've forgotten the context.

I was surprised to learn that he wasn't a proponent of the small "community school" alternative setting in which I taught at'risk students at that time.

I wonder if his legacy has been eclipsed by that left by the character in the movie.

I didn't think to ask him about that.

Rest in Peace, Maestro.
