Poll question: Would You Support Extending Troop Presence in Iraq?
The aftermath of the elections in Iraq isn't going well. There have been purges, bombings, disputes and at least one assassination.

If Iraq cannot form a government within a couple months, or if violence spirals and spreads, is there a condition in which you would support US combat troops staying past the approaching deadline?

The contingency plans to stay have been drafted in case the violence gets worse.

Would you support it?

3. I really don't believe we're ever going to leave entirely
Come on - you build an embassy that is BIGGER than Vatican City - do you really plan on abandoning it? We went for the oil - we'll stay till the fields are sucked dry. No matter WHAT is said in pretty speeches.

22. Oil that is mostly going to non-American oil companies
http://www.businessinsider.com/sovereign-backed-oil-companies-creamed-the-multinationals-in-iraq-2010-2

Maybe Bush did go in for the oil, but it didn't seem to work out that way and at this point I doubt that's why we're still there.

9. No. Only reason we're still there is to keep defense and oil industries and their satellite
industries profiting.

Shutting down the wars now would probably be terrible for an already bad economy. Plus, all those unemployed soldiers straining the labor market.

Sad, horrible, but probably all too true.

11. We are not leaving permanently...There are bases that will continue to be used by U.S. Troops...
Their role is not technically combat. It simple is and is not being extended.

So I voted other.

Now, if you asked if we should extend our combat role, no. I do not support a combat role in Iraq anymore than I would support a combat role in Germany, where we have troops.

I support ending the empire and moving all troops stationed overseas back the the U.S.A.

14. I didn't support it in the beginning and hope that I live long enough to see it end.
By end I mean us leaving. That "stuff" over there will never end.

20. They have been priming the pump for keeping the troops there
later. As the post-election violence worsens, I wouldn't be surprised to hear of an extension.

while we can still pretend we "won."

If Obama screws around much longer, he'll forever be known as the one who "lost the war in Iraq."

23. More uncertainty in Iraq's results.
Each day of uncertainty and violence moves us closer to getting stuck there.
