High school students protest gay student being allowed to take boyfriend to prom
Meanwhile, Derrick's parents have thrown him out of the house. What a world.

====

COCHRAN — A small group of Bleckley County High School students staged a rally at the courthouse Thursday evening to protest their high school allowing a gay student to take his boyfriend to the prom.

Bleckley school system officials last week granted senior Derrick Martin permission to take another boy to prom. The decision marked the first decision in the county’s history about a same-sex couple attending the prom there.

“We knew Derrick was gay,” said Keith Bowman Jr., a high school senior who showed up at the rally. “They don’t want (Cochran) to be known as a pro gay town.”

“People who don’t know the area will think it reflects on everybody,” said John Smith, a grandfather who owns an air-conditioning business in Cochran.

1. Well. It has now officially "reflected on the area". Now everyone thinks it's a hick town.

35. If the term "hick town" is accepted, then many of the
derogatory terms defining northeastern cities should be equally welcome, no?

38. Ok, instead of 'town' we'll use 'backwater scaredy-cat shithole'.
It's a 'hick backwater scaredy-cat shithole'

10. Clearly homophobia isn't just a generational problem.
That's another falsehood in the "sit down and shut up; we'll get to you eventually" doctrine.

12. I wish I could figure out how to leave
a comment on that site. You're right Cochran, no one will think your town is pro-gay. It's much better to be viewed as a cesspool of intolerance and bigotry. Go figure. :eyes:

23. You can actually EAT clay? I have a problem eating potatos
without cheese and chives and butter.

Or fried, boiled and mashed.

How does one eat clay? Without salt?

28. There is actually a condition known as pica
I remember my geography professor telling us about this and it is sometimes prevalant in southern towns that pregnant women craved clay, usually the white clay known as kaolin.

But don't take my word for it since I'm only from Georgia and obviously I'm too stupid to dress myself.

19. Wanda Sykes had a high school student
on her show. The student upset her stupid school because she was going to take her date(girlfriend) to the Prom.

The stupid school canceled the Prom.
I believe there will be a well deserved law suit against the school District.

Wonderful Wanda invited the student to bring her friend to Los Angeles, I think in April. Wanda will be honored at a Fancy Dinner and wants the couple to be her special guests.

For those that have not watched Wanda's show, you are missing a real treat. Every show is well done and Wanda openly talks about her wife and children.

She is fantastic and so is the show!

27. I will say one thing, the Bleckley school system officials really did
a great thing...in Georgia of all places. In CT, no one would care. We have legal gay marriage. But in Georgia?

36. Bleckley High's got about 800 students, perhaps a dozen of whom
showed up to protest the fact that Bleckley was the focus of some attention because school administrators had decided to let the kid take his friend to the prom

The press coverage actually reads ... Most of the dozen attending the rally said they weren’t bothered by Martin being gay or being allowed to attend prom with his partner. But they said the school system’s decision has brought too much attention to their small town ...

Of course, Let's invite the local media to our protest so we can complain about all the media coverage we're getting! does sound like high school. And some local college students helpfully showed up to tell the handful of high school protesters how completely wrong the protest was

My natural reaction would be to spew soda and fall out of my chair laughing and then move on without further thought: it really looks like the forces of goodness and light are winning here hands down -- except for the fact that the student at the center of this has been thrown out of his home, which is the real concern here
