Sacramento Bee Editorial: What hath the GOP unleashed? ("They own what's happening now")

Sunday's passage of health care reform was preceded by many weeks of venomous attacks and wild exaggerations, yet it all seems so tame now in comparison.

Since the vote, at least 10 House members have reported death threats, harassment or vandalism at district offices. More than 100 House Democrats were alarmed enough to meet privately Wednesday with the FBI and Capitol Police. Some requested and received extra security.

Such violence and threats of violence are not free speech and political protest. It is intimidation, it is criminal, and it has no place in a democracy like ours.

Republicans, of course, have condemned the violence and acts of bigotry that followed the bill's passage. Yet their ongoing vitriol has given license to the threats. They own what's happening now.

4. This editorial stance seems rare

But from what I can tell, in spite of the Republican talking points and their endless parroting by the "librul" media, people seem to be drawing the conclusion all on their own that the current level of violence, the threats, the partisanship and the crazed anger is pretty much attributable solely to the Republicans.

Good for the Bee for saying this outright, and not indulging some false equivalency that much of major media seem enamored with.

if they can't win fair and square on any one issue, bring in the brigades...The Teabaggers, The Minutemen/Xenophobes, The Anti-Choicers, Pro-Guns, Pro-Brain Dead women (Terri Schiavo, FL. debacle), Pro-Stealing Elections (Bush v. Gore), Pro-War/Murder....you name it, they send out the signals and the wackos show up for it ALL. The Dems cower, the repukes get their way....most of the time. Notice how the repuke politicians feign innocence and condemn the behaviors THEY brought on by all their vitriolic rhetoric? They're all a bunch of sleazebags. These threats are exactly what they wanted. They aren't fooling anyone with a brain.
