April 19 & 20

There's a reason the Freepers are picking April 19th for their "2nd amendment rally" in Washington.

It's a Monday... who picks a Monday to hold a rally, unless there's a particular significance to the date?

Here's why:

April 19 & 20 are the high-holy days for the militia whack jobs, that's why.

April 19th, 1995 - Timothy McVeigh murders 168 people in Oklahoma City.

April 19th, 1993 - The 51-day seige on the Branch Davidian compound ends with 81 dead, including David Koresh.

April 20th, 1985 - ATF raid on The Covenant, The Sword, and the Arm of the Lord compound in northern Arkansas.

April 20th, 1889 - Adolf Hitler is born

April 19th, 1861 - A pro-secession mob attacks US troops in Baltimore, Maryland

2. As a girl who grew up in Lexington Mass,
It INFURIATES me that these raving lunatics have hijacked the birth of democracy.

3. Notice that the original poster didn't even mention the real significance of April 19
You do realize that the birth of democracy was triggered by an attempt to impose gun control, right? The events of April 19, 1775 were triggered by an attempt by the British crown to seize arms and powder stockpiled by the colonists in Concord. That has far more significance than any of the events listed by the OP.

4. Yes. And the democratic republic that resulted from that conflict
enshrined the rule of the law as agreed on by the majority with basic minority protections.

5. Also
The particular significance to the date is in reference to the govts actions on those dates, not to the acts of individual idiocy.

11. Birth of Democracy????
I have always believed that the Greeks wee the people that created Democracy and that happened before our current Calender was created so there was no April 20th at that time..

6. I suspect that with just a little research, one can find nearly anything
Edited on Thu Mar-25-10 08:35 AM by Obamanaut
that happened on any date in history.

Perhaps too much is being read into these particular dates.

12. That if you are of a certain fringe
those dates ARE that important for the reasons stated. Concord doesn't even come into the radar for these idiots.

I highly recommend people open their eyes, dates have more significance for some folks than for others... they are symbolic.

14. I guess you don't understand the concept of symbolic significance.
My dads' birthday was yesterday. He died 10 years ago. Many many other things happened on that day, but to me, it was my dad's birthday.

Get it?

15. And for many around the world
Dec. 25 means nothing. But to those who celebrate/observe the day, it certainly has great significance, no matter what else has taken place.

13. The "importance" of April 20th has been talked about before
The Columbine shootings happened on that day also and I remember it being linked to the "significance" of that day.
