Poll: Tea Party Is The Home Of The Angry White Woman

A new national poll sheds some interesting light on the tea party movement. Though it confirms that the group is more white and more Republican than anything else, something other polls in the past have suggested, it also shows that your average tea partier is more likely to be a woman than an man. And she's likely to be very angry at the government and a very big fan of Sarah Palin.

The Quinnipiac poll out this morning shows the just 13% of voters call themselves tea partiers, and those that do are on the far fringes of anger at and distrust of the government. The group is basically Republican -- 77% identified themselves that way, with just 5% calling themselves independent. In a surprise, 55% are women, while just 45% are men.

Female leaders are, of course, a key component of the movement. Though Glenn Beck and other male media figures are most often thought of as crafting the ideology of the movement, the politicians the group cheers loudest for have been women since the beginning. No sitting politician has done more to associate herself with the movement than Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN), and no political figure is more associated with the movement's future than Sarah Palin.

The Q poll shows that the tea partiers embrace their female political leaders almost as much as the leaders embrace the movement. While just 33% of voters overall said they had a favorable opinion of Palin, 72% of the tea partiers say they think of her favorably.

.....Only 15% of the tea partiers in the Q poll said they voted for Obama; 77% said voted for McCain. Only 16% are even nominally Democrats. That suggests, as many at tea party-style rallies will tell you, that the movement is more about a split in the GOP than it is anger at Obama.

2. Angry (and I would bet, extremely uneducated) OLDER white women

I would love to see the educational level correlates. I am betting that this is a consequence of many decades of diminishing high school graduation rates during these older women's lives (and increasing divorce rates) with the accompanying decimation of future opportunities.

Non-Hispanic White and Black Graduates at Record Levels

Last year, 85 percent of adults age 25 and over had completed at least high school, an all-time high, the U.S. Census Bureau reported today. Also in 2003, 27 percent of adults age 25 and over had a college degree, another record.

The percentage of non-Hispanic whites (89 percent) and blacks (80 percent) who had a high school diploma or higher marked new highs. The proportion of blacks rose by 10 percentage points from 1993 to 2003, while non-Hispanic whites saw an increase of 5 percentage points in this category.

The report, Educational Attainment in the United States: 2003, said women made large gains in earning college degrees. Over the past decade, women with a bachelor’s degree or higher jumped nearly 7 percentage points, from 19 percent to 26 percent. During the same time, men had a 4-percentage-point increase going from 25 percent to 29 percent.

For the second year in a row, women had a slightly higher proportion of high school graduates (85 percent) than men (84 percent).

And who are you going to blame the "increasing divorce rates" on? Men? The fact is that women file for divorce twice as often as men. That is women making a "choice". Unless you somehow think women shouldn't have that choice.

Back off. You make very wrong assumptions about what I was trying to convey--foolish assumptions.

First of all, I am assuming the median age of teabagger women is older--probably in their 40s and many far older. Certainly, the video and photos of rallies have certainly shown a majority of far older women--many complaining about the perceived impact on "their medicare." It is this cohort who had poor high school graduation rates, not the 25 year olds of today. The census trend you cite is a recent one.

Second of all, in that older aged woman, if they were less educated and statistically more likely to be on their own (either from being single all their lives, widowed, or divorced) they may also face the double whammy of poor opportunities.

Stop trying to put a gender blame bias into others' posts that is not there. I don't defend these women, but am simply trying to understand what may be behind their "creation."

14. I can tell you that, I've spoken to a number of them...

Many of them are VERY religious, especially here in Texas, as in Southern Baptist. That has a lot to do with it. They believe the PTB in Washington, are amoral, immoral, radicals (atheists), who have no moral values whatsoever..... none, and hate Christianity.

Many of them believe abortion is a grave sin, should be a crime, and any woman who has an abortion is a ....... well, pick whatever slur you want. They think the national government, by allowing abortion to be legal, has far overstepped its authority, and abrogated any moral authority it once had.

They don't like gays and they think homosexuality is a choice. They believe that by "forcing" people to "accept" gays, the Federal government further abrogates any moral authority it once had. They believe that the PTB are trying to "ram homosexuality down (their) throats".

They believe many feminists hate men. That feminists are trying to abolish "traditional marriage". That feminists devalue motherhood, and thus themselves and the choice they have made to have children.

In other words, the Federal government, by permitting these things, has far exceeded the authority granted to it under the US Constitution. And "these people" are trying to destroy America, and remake it into some "socialist paradise" like the USSR.

That pretty much sums up their beliefs. Those are theirs, not mine. They grew up with society a certain way. And as with many people, the older they get, the less tolerant of any change they become.

20. I agree with your assessment of the impact of "religion" on these

women... RW fundamentalist forms of Christianity (which, I, by the way do not consider to be Christianity) is an incredibly strong predictor of attitudes among those who embrace it.

There is NO doubt this is at play.
