ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The 1996 Toyota Camry involved in a crash that killed three people will be inspected in mid-April, prosecutors announced Monday.

The Camry's driver, 32-year-old Koua Fong Lee, is serving an eight-year prison sentence for criminal vehicular homicide. But in the wake of Toyota's recent problems with sudden acceleration, Lee is asking for a new trial.

"I am very pleased that we are moving ahead in a timely manner with inspection of the car," Ramsey County Attorney Susan Gaertner said in a statement Monday. "This is an important step toward gathering the evidence we need to determine whether any defects may have contributed to the crash."

Prosecutors met Monday with attorneys for Lee and the crash victims, along with an automobile expert hired by Lee's attorneys and the St. Paul police department. They agreed to have the car inspected during the week of April 19 in a garage at the police impound lot, Gaertner said.

Lee's attorneys hired Richard Dusek to inspect the car. He'll be joined by Wade Bartlett, a mechanical engineer hired by the county attorney's office. They'll work with prosecutors and police to develop a protocol for inspection.

"Representatives of our office thought it was a helpful meeting," Gaertner said. "It was a cooperative discussion about how to best ensure justice in this very tragic case."
