Question about HCR and NON profit organizations...
Many small nonprofits simply cannot afford to pay for health insurance for their employees (and one of the reasons that many retirees on Medicare can take advantage of part time jobs with them). They are in much the same situation as small businesses, but since they don't make a profit a tax break in the current legislation doesn't really affect them. Is there any provision to help THEM or are the employees eligible to go into the exchanges as individuals?

1. If they have less than 50 employees, there are exemptions for them
Here is a good summary of the bill

http://www.groom.com/media/publication/670_GLG%20Health%20Care%20Reform%20Chart%203-22-10%20_for%20call-in%20circulation_%20_2_.pdf

"For purposes of the shared responsibility section, the term “employer” means an employer that employs an average of at least 50 employees (formore than 120 days, if employer hires seasonal workers).

Employers with fewer than 50 employees are not required to pay a fee for each employee who receives a tax credit for health insurance through astate exchange. "

2. Thanks for that. Most small nonprofits eon'thave over 50 employees
so it doesn't apply.

Here in New Haven, we have a lot of nonprofits that do wonderful things for the community but cannot pay for employee insurance. What happens is that the over 65 group find employment but also the younger ones whose spouse has insurance thru their employer. Sort of an interesting mix. It's a nice deal in many ways. The older worker gets a real break and his/her experience is counted more (but for the wrong reasons). Still, it works out well...expertise is not forgotten and abandoned...

3. You're welcome. Of course this is not a done deal yet.
We have to wait to see what the Senate does this week with the "fixes". I'm sure there will be more anaylsis from this law firm and from others once that is settled.
