How the healthcare bill will impact you, your family and your business

Beyond the hype, snipes and myths, what will the landmark measure really do?

March 22, 2010 (San Diego’s East County) – How will the landmark healthcare bill passed last night by the House of Representatives impact you, your family and your business? The answers, detailed extensively below, may surprise you.

President Barack Obama is expected to sign the measure in the next couple of days, though the Senate has yet to vote on whether to accept House changes to a version of the bill that the Senate recently passed. While some changes may yet be made, major elements include provisions to take effect immediately, as well as many others that will be phased in over several years. These include:

NOTE: I wrote this article, which includes a very detailed list with descriptions of dozens of provisions and when they will each be implemented over the next decade. We welcome comments posted at our site as well as here.

4. Could you answer this question, then?
I thought the health care reform bill was going to expand Medicaid to cover low-income people, as well as people on disability. (I live in one of the miserable states where low-income people can't get Medicaid unless they're on SSD or SSI.)

Yet I see no mention of Medicaid in your article.

Can you explain how low-income people in situations like this will be covered? Thanks in advance.

6. Year five...
Medicaid eligibility will be expanded to include non-elderly people within 133% of the poverty level. States will receive increased federal funding to cover these individuals.

But subsidies should kick in sooner than that.

17. Five years you say? And yet the proponents who have been snarking at anyone
who dare not like this bill have been throwing that "you'll get medicaid" canard as though it were the end all to be all of any complaints. And now it's a whole 5 years away? Exactly when will and adult who is uninsured be able to afford to get health insurance on the individual market exactly?

20. Every proponent I know says it's better than nothing.
The only real divide here is the willingness to give Congress the benefit of the doubt.

7. It will cover poor people under Medicaid in 2014. We have it listed:
Medicaid eligibility will be expanded to include non-elderly people within 133% of the poverty level. States will receive increased federal funding to cover these individuals.

16. Thanks
I hope the Republicans won't find a way around this, or the other good provisions of this bill.

8. Thank you! I hope everyone will help share these truths about the bill.
From what I'm seeing, the more people learn about what's really in it, the more they support it or at least don't fear it. It isn't as strong as some of us wanted, but conservatives are surprised to learn what the bill actually does and doesn't do. They have been lied to by Fox and right-wing radio hacks.
