Cops: Sitter Caught on Tape Abusing Infant

Police in Jacksonville, Fla. Say Jeannine Campbell Is Seen Throwing, Swatting, Slapping 11-Month-Old

Woman identified by police as Jeannine Campbell, of Jacksonville, Fla., is seen on video authorities say was secretly recorded by parents of 11-month-old boy allegedly abusing him

A Jacksonville, Fla. babysitter police say was caught on camera swatting, throwing, slapping and kicking an eleven month old boy told an investigator she did it out of anger at his parents, according to an arrest report cited by The Florida Time-Union.

Jeannine Marie Campbell, 53, has been charged with battery on a child. She was arrested earlier this week and remains jailed on $75,000 bail.

Authorities say the boy's parents, whose names weren't disclosed, have two children. They told police they noticed a black eye on one of the two about eight weeks ago, and Campbell couldn't explain what happened, so they installed a hidden camera.

-----------------------

Police reviewed the video and saw the child picked up and slung into a playpen, hit in the head with a ball, slapped, hit with a towel, swatted 11 times and kicked, the arrest report said.

"Throughout the video, Ms. Campbell's demeanor appeared very angry, and it was obvious that she was abusing the child and not playing with him," one officer wrote in the report.

2. Yikes
Just seeing the first few seconds of her handling the child somewhat makes me want to generalize & feel uncomfortable about hiring any babysitters.

Although, I'm sure if I buy that. How many of us have wanted to beat up a kid/baby because their parents angered us?

38. When I saw that little guy still trying to play with that ball, after
all the manhandling, it killed me. That and when his little arm when up in defense when she came stomping into the room to knock him over. I swear to God it was like he played dead after that. I cannot, and never will be able to, imagine the kind of rage it takes to do that to an infant.

9. That is horrible to watch.
If I had a "feeling" about the caregiver I placed my helpless child with I wouldn't get a video tape, I would get another babysitter. It hurts me to think that that child was used because the parents had a feeling something was up.

The parents put the cam in because of a black eye 2 months BEFORE! Kid was probably beaten daily
during those months while the parent's gathered evidence. AWFUL!

26. um, WTF???
If your baby is fine when you leave and the has a black eye when you come back home, then authorities need to be called and the babysitter should no longer be employed.

:wow:

32. and to be fair....
first time parents question EVERYTHING. For all I know, they rationalized the scenario as their boy rubbing his eye too hard.

I think it's easier questioning the possible actions and/or intentions of someone you don't know than the people you do know...especially the person you trust your baby to. What sucks is my assumption that they won't be able to trust anyone else with their child after this. For good reason obviously, but it still sucks.

41. Sometimes babysitters do absolutely nothing wrong and kids
still get hurt.

My wife and I were going to my class reunion about 10 years ago when my girls were 4 and 2. We had no family in the area so I contacted a local daycare to set up a sitter (a very nice lady who runs the daycare). As we were driving away the lady who had are girls in her car came out of the car and flagged us down. It turns out that our older daughter had hit our younger one with the seat belt buckle causing a laceration and some bleeding. If we had been even a few minutes later, then what would have been our opinion? Fortunately a bandaid fixed the problem and the kids seemed to have a good time with her children.

We rarely left our children with sitters when they were younger. We lived about four years in a town where we had no family, and we just hated getting sitters. Once we moved back to my wife's hometown, then we were more comfortable because we had her parents to watch our girls. Now they can watch themselves.

Needless to say if I suspected a sitter, that individual would never be sitting my children again. I am not going to play detective with my childrens' safety. A nanny cam would be extra security, but as a proactive approach and not a reactive one.

to be a police officer and be a first responder to this sort of thing....this 'sort of thing' is (hopefully/probably) RARE, yet the these WORST stories always 'make it' onto the DU. What's with THAT?

Is 'someone'(?) trying to 'break the hearts' of Democrats (and other empaths)? Our hearts are already 'broken'.

We have witnessed and lived through cruelty our ownselves.

Reading what the OP has posted is sad enough. My heart goes out to this family and I hope this baby boy recovers from his injuries.

I remember when my daughter was a baby and my husband and I had the "nanny cam" conversation. While we never did buy one (we had no life back then unfortunately), we had an interesting debate over how we would use the camera hypothetically. He liked the idea of keeping it a secret and watching it after, but I argued that a babysitter should always be told that several cameras were set up around the house in hidden locations to keep them paranoid...even if there were no cameras. I'm a bit twisted that way I guess.

17. Your idea could have possibly saved a child from harm.
Letting a babysitter know they are being watched could possibly keep them from hurting the child. Hiding a camera gives one the evidence, but at what price?

22. That was my argument...
What's the ultimate goal as a parent? To play the game of "gotcha" with someone who might be abusing your child or to do your best to make sure it never gets to that point to begin with? Unfortunately I believe these nanny cams are marketed for the "gotcha" scenario instead of prevention.

I feel like an asshole for saying this only because I DO NOT want to come across as blaming the parents in this situation because I absolutely do not blame them. They are now living a hell right now that they do not deserve. My heart goes out to them.

23. I know...I was very careful in what I wrote on this too.
I don't think people really want to believe this could happen, hence the putting up a camera. I cannot imagine what that must have felt like to watch for the parents, if I was in tears watching it myself.
