55. I didn't realize
that Elizabeth was sleeping was also sleeping with Rielle.

Oh, she wasn't.

The affair is all on Edwards and Hunter. Elizabeth may not be a perfect human being, but she had no part in the affair.

Hunter had kept quiet up until this point. I thought that was smart on her part because now that she's spoken publicly, she looks like trash.

I remember the photos of him changing a prop baby's diaper while not wearing a shirt--lol, together he and Rielle have a complete outfit! Then he went on to the Playgirl spread, which I did not see but I hope to goddess didn't include babies or baby props.

It's all about money. But on Rielle's side I think she also wants "Johnny" back. And Edwards may end up going back to her since he has no other place to go.

28. This is actually the first time she has spoken publicly
I wish John Edwards would never go before a camera again - ever. He is the one who caused this to be dragged out over years - by repeatedly lying about the truth. Had he told the entire truth back in 2008, it would long since have been over.

Now, the biggest concern is that he might possibly have misused money collected for his poverty foundation - which is sick.

A nonprofit group that John Edwards set up to fight poverty paid $124,000 for Web videos and photos to the former Democratic presidential candidate’s mistress, say four lawyers familiar with the payments. The Center for Promise and Opportunity wrote the previously unreported checks to videographer Rielle Hunter in late 2006, the same year Edwards acknowledged he started a “liaison” with her. (Edwards contended originally that he cut off the relationship that year. He admitted more recently he’s the father of Hunter’s daughter, born in February 2008.) The checks have since been subpoenaed by federal prosecutors in North Carolina as part of a sprawling criminal investigation into nearly $1.5 million in payments from various Edwards entities and campaign contributors that were for Hunter’s benefit, say the lawyers, who asked not to be identified talking about an ongoing probe.
<snip>
The payments to Hunter were made at the same time that Edwards’s political action committee was separately paying her a similar amount to produce Webisodes promoting Edwards as a political figure. (The Webisodes became a source of controversy within the campaign; some aides thought they were “goofy and unpresidential,” says a former top Edwards aide who also asked not to be identified due to the ongoing probe.) But the payments from the tax-exempt center could raise separate issues if federal prosecutors determine that Edwards misused the group’s assets, since the rules for such tax-exempt groups are stricter than those for political committees.

31. Ya know... It doesn't really bother me for some reason.
I voted for Edwards twice. (Ohio primary and for VP in 2004)

Maybe I'm a little upset that he turned out to be a family-values-style-gingrich. Sure, Ms Hunter is milking the controversy for all it's worth, but Edwards pissed me off and deserves what he's getting.

Reminds me of Gary Hart: I agreed with his political views (still do). Both of those dipshits made their own beds.

when he was running with Kerry.

He had a Rally in Culver City CA and there were about 400 people there.

When he did his exit I was standing on the front row behind the ropes and he saw me and walked passed lots of people to shake my hand and say hello. He was extremely handsome.

I always thought it was because I was African American but now that I know what a scum he was/is ~ Ms. goclark was looking pretty good that day. LOL

Talk about piling on - she was trashed in Game Change, trashed in the book by Edward's aide, and now trashed by Hunter, which has got to be the lowest blow of all. She must be absolutely reeling. And Edwards has remained silent while the mother of his children is being savaged by his mistress and just about everyone else in town. Nice.

57. yeah that "emasculation" concept caught my attn too...
What weirdness. Do men really have a fear of "emasculation?" Is that fear so powerful it makes someone stay in a marriage for 30 years? So is this the job of a mistress--to re-emasculate? It's like a paradox--if you need to be re-emasculated, how did you lose your masculinity in the first place and if it takes a WOMAN to re-emasculate you, is that whole scenario not rather...wimpy?

C'mon men, is this real? WHERE does this thinking come from? I'm mystified--this whole concept is so far from my world.

Doesn't that reduce the wife to having a Geisha like role. (Note there is no feminine version of the word "emasculate", but if there were, it would describe the effect of Rielle's idea of what a woman should do.)

The whole notion conjures up ideas of extreme sex roles.

So--Is Rielle worried about her femininity???

65. It is interesting
What is strange is that Edwards, at least in 2004, spoke of often of a partnership of equals and often mentioned things that he spoke of Elizabeth suggesting. It was this as much as anything that led to their marriage being idealized. This did not make him "emasculated", but if anything seen as stronger because he had chosen an adult relationship with an obviously strong woman. Had Edwards been married to a beautiful trophy wife, whose interests did not extend beyond raising their family and having a social life, I think he would not have had the support that he did. Elizabeth Edwards, to some degree, made people worried that he was too slick, think there had to be more there.

Think of it, no non RW lunatic, ever questioned Bill Clinton's of John Kerry's masculinity, though both Hillary and Teresa are very strong, intelligent women.

70. oh yes, agreed:
"if he had been married to a beautiful trophy wife, he would not have had the support that he did."

Certainly if he had been married to Rielle, it would have been a total disaster! He needed Elizabeth to make it appear that he had a marriage of equals, since that's what women voters generally look for. But alas, he's made of the same old need for a "bad girl and a good girl" immature stuff as Bill, it would seem.

I say there's no way he will ever marry Rielle. She's not his image of a wife. She's his image of a mistress.

I'm glad Elizabeth is divorcing him. While she's no perfect ideal, at least she's getting some distance from him. She will be stronger for it.

John can only pick up bimbos from now on. What self-respecting woman would go near him??? :puke:

36. Technically, she's not the one who's pushing herself on us
It's the media pushing her on US.

If they didn't want her on your TeeVee day and night, she wouldn't be on. Period.

This is done for a reason, don't you EVER forget.

45. Well, planning for life after your spouse dies of cancer would be right up there...
This Hunter woman is obviously an opportunist. On the other hand, nobody forced Edwards into her arms. I'm relieved that Edwards' campaign didn't get anywhere, though. Imagine how much worse this would be if he'd got the VP slot or the presidency.

48. Elizabeth got to tell her side of the story, Rielle should get the
same chance. John Edwards is the one who should be bashed.

That being said, the pictures are sleezy as hell!

67. The woman's lack of empathy is astonishing
Edited on Tue Mar-16-10 11:13 AM by Mike Daniels
Her whole "what happens between two consenting adults" attitude and moral relativism prove that she deserves the reputation she's acquired.

I only hope that she's as generous with the "consenting adults" attitude when Edwards skips around on her in the future.

76. There have been no reports that they are together, which I assume
they could do now that the Edwardses are separated. Given the public nature of the affair, I doubt it would impact the divorce. Although his life will be complex, with two ex- families( one being just Quinn), he likely will find someone, probably younger, who, in spite of everything, is attracted by his good looks and his wealth.

Edwards really will have a tough time finding something that he can do with the rest of his life - and it will be hard to ever again have healthy relationships with Elizabeth, his children and any future woman. He really has messed things up.

77. yes
I think he's too far gone to reinvent himself. Sad end for an intelligent man who had it all. He lives eternally in the twilight of what might have been.

I suggest a monastery, listening to the sound of crows cawing.

75. Her Wiki is pretty fascinating... her dad was implicated in the Horse Murders scandal
Electrocuting thoroughbred horses for insurance money?

Dated novelist Jay McInerney and was the inspiration for his book "Story of My Life" about hard partying socialites.

81. I think she hates John Edwards.
If she loved him, she would never do this.

She wants to ruin him. That's the only explanation for this exposure.

Well, that plus the money.

As some day it may happen that a victim must be found,
I've got a little list — I've got a little list
Of society offenders who might well be underground,
And who never would be missed — who never would be missed!

The Mikado

:D

Uh, the underground is not DU, it's Gilbert & Sullivan :-)
