And if you didn't back up your system before the power went, tough luck. Well, at least you get fresh new Ipad.

3. This happened to my iPhone and I had to get a new one.
Everytime I charge it I back it up so I didn't have any problems whatsoever. It was seamless. They even removed my screen protector and slapped it on the new one.

4. I'm unclear on why you think this is a bad or unfair thing.
So far, the battery in my almost-two-year-old iPhone 3G is doing just
fine, even though its lithium ion battery gets reasonably-far discharged
every day as a result of *LOTS* of use. So if it needs a new battery after
three (or even two!) years and it costs me $100 for that battery swap, I
won't feel ill-used.

And it's trivially-easy to back up the phone using iTunes, so unless
you're one of the people who hates iTunes for "political" reasons,
there's no beef there, either.

That's really one of the beauties of the iPhone "ecosystem": all
this stuff just works.

6. I guess it depends what you are using the 'pad' for.
I was thinking of getting one for portable displays but now I'm not so sure. I just don't understand why they can't make a user serviceable battery? More cynical people have said that it is just good old fashioned corporate greed. I'm guessing it has more to do with design complexity?

10. No, it has everything to do with them making more money

It takes a 3 cent connector and a little forethought to make a slot for the battery.

Everything else has a replaceable battery, laptop, phone, radio, etc, etc. Not apple.

16. "They" will, they just happens not to be Apple
Jobs wants you to keep buying, so yes it's corporate greed, but a battery "compartment" would mess up his cherished designs.

Check out the iPod / iPhone battery replacements and repair at Milliamp. http://www.ipodjuice.com/

You can bet as soon as the iPad hit the market, they buy some, and tear them apart so they can offer the service to their customers.

Compare Our Battery Offering to Apple’s Offer

* Our battery replacement costs less than what Apple will charge you.
* You get to keep your IPOD or IPHONE if you go with us, where Apple may give you a refurbished IPOD back.
* With us you can be up and running as soon as the next business day, with Apple it can take much longer.
* Our batteries are guaranteed for ten years, where Apple covers their replacement batteries for just 90 days.

Compare Our Battery Offering to that of Our Competitors

* Our robust IPOD batteries are guaranteed for ten years; no competitor is offering this.
* Our detailed instructions walk you through the process, while our competitors assume you understand Chinese.
* Our effective tools safely open your IPOD, while our competitors give you cheap flimsy tools that fail to do the job.
* Our superior support is there for you before, during and after the sale, while our competitors won't return your call.

18. There are reasons not to have a removable battery.
Edited on Sat Mar-13-10 07:15 PM by Tesha
1. Batteries last a pretty long time these days meaning there's
not much need to replace them. Also, unlike certain mobile
phones that need to have to have removable batteries so you
can "unjam" them, Apple iPhones (etc.) don't jam much, and you
can always unjam them without needing to remove the battery.

2. The case can be simpler and mechanically much more rigid
if there's no need for a battery door. And without the long seam
of the battery door, there are fewer ways for water to intrude
into the case. And lack of a battery door also saves on cost.

3. There's no need for a battery connector, or at least not
for one that is operated frequently. That saves money and
adds reliability.

4. The battery can probably be slightly larger physically
so it can have a slightly higher electrical capacity.

5. There's far less chance of the phone being "crashed"
by the sudden removal of the battery, so the reliability
of the file system is more-easily assured.

Don't be surprised if the "non-removable battery" trend
spreads to other mobile phones, laptops, and netbooks.

8. Pretending Iphones dont have problems is just silly
http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1333&start=0

All you have to do is go to the support page to see the myriad problems people have with them. They are cool toys but buying into the mantra that "they just work" is for hopeless fanboys.

19. It's just like with Toyota Priuses: people who don't have them all have reasons to hate them.
Funny how that works, ehh?

Yawn.

Ahem...

Back up your damn devices regularly!

Additionally, my (and my wife's) iPhone batteries are almost three years old and going strong.

Turned out to be a non-issue. The batteries are good.

14. Makes no difference to me,
To me, the Ipad looks like a hunk of junk. Don't get me wrong.. I love my iphone, but the ipad seems like an itouch made bigger. I will be buying a tablet but the odds of it being the ipad are slim to none.

Just sayin..

17. Before obsessing about data loss...
Remember that the iPad is built like an iPhone, not a Macbook. By default, a data backup will occur as aprt of the Sync process every time you plug it in to your computer to recharge.
