My daughter got a job!!!
My daughter had two interviews this week. I just got a call, she got hired. She will be the night staff person in a home for disabled adults. She's been looking for 4 months (just out of college.) She won't be making a ton of money, but she will make enough to pay rent in the apt. she shares with 4 others. She just got on food stamps this week too, so hopefully she will make enough to be ineligible next month! If not, she will have the food stamps to help her get by too. This was in the nick of time, because her school loans come due in June. This will give her a chance to build up a little cushion. Good luck to all those who continue to look!

I just had to share.

6. Congratulations!
Is this in her field? I ask, because I, too, am unemployed, and wondering what my chances are of staying in my profession of 20 years the education!

7. For her it is, but she is just getting into it
it is very entry level. She is a psychology major, but still has about a year to go. This will be the night staff person for a home for disabled adults. So it is applicable to her major, but her goal is to work with kids.

28. Yeah, I've completely accepeted pay cut -
probably of at least 33%, if I'm "lucky" enough to continue in a professional position in my field. I've heard PhDs are having trouble finding work!

8. Your daughter's story makes me really glad for her ...... and really angry.
I'm glad she got a job and that she's able to start on starting on her life. That's a good thing for her and good for you. I'm sure you were worried, too. That's what we parents do. We worry about our kids no matter how old.

What angers me is that a kid gets out of college, has to take a low paying job, and has to use food stamps to survive long enough to pay off a mountain of debt.

I assume she's in the same boat as 45 million of her fellow citizens on the SS Uninsured.

Anyway .... sorry to go off topic.

For your daughter and for you:

13. If you knew my daughter's story you would be even angrier
I adopted her when she was 9 from foster care. She chose to go to college out of state, and I've been struggling to pay out of state tuition and to do what I can to help her succeed. Because of her past, she struggles with severe--very severe--depression and anxiety. She is on my insurance, but it doesn't actually pay anything until she runs up $2000 in "out of network" costs--since the insurance is not a nationwide company. Even when it kicks in, it will only pay %40 because it is "out of network". She needs medication to live with her mental illness. She tried to go to a nurse practitioner to get someone to prescribe for her. They wouldn't take her because her insurance is not local. This was even though I was willing to pay all her health care bills. My insurance does cover her medication because she can go to Walgreens.

She will get benefits once she works at this job for six months. She won't be able to keep the job if she doesn't find someone to prescribe for her. Fortunately, she has one more refill left.

But enough of how pissed off I am.

I'm still doing the happy dance.:bounce:  :headbang: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

12. If your daughter doesn't make enough to pay a student loan comfortably
Edited on Fri Mar-12-10 05:42 PM by lunatica
She can ask for a deferment for up to a year, and renew it at the end of the year if she has to. They aren't like the IRS who don't give a crap if you don't have enough to eat.

And it's great your daughter got work! Woohooo! It's a wonderful day!

16. Student loan people are very nice.. AGES ago, when our first child
was born with multiple medical issues, and we were drowning in doctor bills, all it took was a phone call, and they deferred my measly payment, wished us and our son well..and said to call them when we felt able to start up paying again.. I never got any angry letters or phone calls demanding payment.. of course it was 1973 and the loan balance was only $1500, but we were quite poor... after about 6 months, my husband got a raise, and we accelerated the payments to get rid of the debt..

17. Google student loan deferments.
There's all kinds of options. She can consolidate her loans and get a small monthly payment. It'll take a long time but it will be affordable when she makes more money. She can also pay on it for a while and at any time ask for a deferment if she's out of work. The interest keeps accruing so she should pay when she gets a better job.

20. I told her that
whenever she meets someone who is unemployed, now she will know how hard being unemployed is. It is the worst job--to have to look for work, because the searcher keeps hearing they aren't good enough and then still has to go out and basically ask to get told that over and over.
