Woman Decapitated in Freak Lawnmower Accident
TOWNSVILLE, Australia - A woman died in a freak accident when a lawnmower accidentally kicked up a stray piece of metal that decapitated her.

Police say the 42-year-old woman was walking to work when she was struck in the head by a 2-foot long piece of steel pipe.

Safety officials are still investigating the tragedy, that happened in the northern Queensland town of Townsville.

A landscaper towing a grass cutter behind a small tractor accidentally hit the pipe as it was lying in the long grass.

According to the Daily Telegraph, the landscaper was so distraught, he was hospitalized for shock.

Witnesses said the woman was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

with her head ripped off.

Happened here from a car accident involving a guy driving a convertible into oncoming landscaping truck towing a heavy grated trailer full of equipment.

16. Should they even HAVE lawns in Australia? Isn't it supposed to be awfully dry?
Kind of a whole continent of southern California?

But all along the coast is very nice. Some of the whitest sand beaches in the world are in Melbourne. IIRC.

13. Something similar happened here to a woman riding down the road.
The lawn mower mowing the median kicked up something and shot it through her car. Killed her instantly. Her children were in the car and were uninjured. Freaky indeed. And so sad. I would have to be hospitalized too. I can't imagine witnessing that.

19. I smell exaggeration
It is quite hard to get a human head off the body with one blow of a blade, let alone a pipe.

Visualize a two foot pipe being thrown by even very fast and powerful blades and we're still talking about maybe 100 yards/second.

And that could hit a person in the head (as the article states) and carry the whole head away off the body? (Keep in mind that the pipe is flying through air and subject to deflection.)

A blow to the head that yanks off the head? No. A blade to the neck cuts through things, but in the incident as described the head would have to be pulled off.

By "decapitated" they probably mean having lost a chunk of head, not actual decapitation.

The unfortunate pedestrian is equally dead either way, of course.

21. Just speculating here.
If the pipe were cut diagonally and contacted the victim dorsally rather than ventrally, it is quite possible most relevant structures could have been severed.

Unfortunate to be sure, either way.

24. No clue
I don't think I would ever want to see a head completely come off. I know it is possible from other accidents. Sometimes without being there who knows.
