Gay prostitution ring linked to Vatican

By Philip Pullella, REUTERS

VATICAN CITY - One of Pope Benedict’s ceremonial ushers and a member of an elite choir in St Peter’s Basilica have been implicated in a gay prostitution ring, in the latest sexual scandal to taint the Vatican.

11. No, the priests are pedophiles....
the Vatican would like us all to believe it is 'the gays' because it points the finger away from the criminal element, the pedophiles, they have protected instead of dealing with them.

This story has nothing to do with pedophile priests preying on the young.

18. Different point entirely...
The person implicated in the prostitution ring is NOT a priest and prostitution is not pedophilia. The priests were pedophiles preying on the young in their congregation.

The age of the prostitutes does not seem to be an issue as it is not raised in the article.

15. Most people don't know the difference.
I read once that the majority of pedophiles are het, but I've never been able to find the item again.

21. I think it is important to make, and repeat as necessary, the point...
so that more people do become aware of the difference. The Vatican has tried to attach pedophilia to being gay and, sadly, they have been somewhat successful at this despicable ploy.

Undermining the perspective of the church as a moral authority is good for the world since it means that the truth is getting out.

7. Not just prostitution. Corruption too.
Ghinedu Ehiem, a Nigerian, was dismissed by the Vatican on Wednesday from the Giulia Choir after his name appeared in transcripts of police wiretaps, published by an Italian newspaper, in an unrelated Italian investigation.

<snip>

Among four people arrested last month in the corruption probe was Angelo Balducci, a engineer who is a board member of Italy’s public works department and a construction consultant to the Vatican. Balducci was arrested on corruption charges and the allegatons of prostitution emerged only later.

Balducci is also a member of an elite group called “Gentlemen of His Holiness”, ushers who are called to serve in the Vatican’s Apostolic Palace on major occasions such as when the pope receives heads of state or presides at big events.

20. I am underwhelmed with underwhelment - and yet - amused.
Finally they have an embarrassing scandal that didn't involve the victimization of small children.

They need more of these and fewer of the child variety.

23. My brother is a priest, he is not a pedophile, the Vatican was not aware of or condoned this guy's
actions.

I am a recovering Catholic so I don't have any personal reasons to defend the Church. It's just that every time Catholic gets in a headline the DU mud slingers come out of their holes.

31. Maybe making a bunch of guys vow celibacy then surrounding them with men is not a good idea.
No one is gay (except the ones who are) when they are sentenced to 25 years to life. But when you don't have a choice of anything but you do with butt. Maybe if they let priests marry then there wouldn't be all of this. Or there is one other thought, which is a lot of these men turned to God when they realized they were gay and thought the church would straighten them up.

32. Will the Church ever drop the chastity bullshit?
If they allowed priests to marry, many of the church's sexual problems would go away.

And if the church dropped their opposition to homosexuality, my guess is that 99% of their scandals would also go away. (From everything I've read, child abuse is the rare exception, not the rule, among gays.)

As far as I know, the bible has no passage that says "Thou shalt not screw." I also don't recall that Jesus had anything to say about that.

Depriving normal human beings of sex, regardless of orientation, is insane. I can't speak for women, but I can speak for men. By the age of 14, every boy knows that an erection doesn't have a conscience. The fact that the church pretends this isn't so is what leads to so many scandals. Priests, are human and like most men, they get horny. It's not difficult to predict where this eventually leads.

In my opinion, most priests who seduce children do so because there is nothing else available to them. So I guess what I'm saying here is that the church's hypocrisy could possibly be the cause of much of the pedophilia that has taken place.
