Powerful quake strikes Argentina

updated 3:30 p.m. ET, Sat., Feb. 27, 2010

SALTA, Argentina - A strong earthquake struck northwestern Argentina on Saturday on the same day that a massive temblor struck neighboring Chile. Authorities reported at least one person was killed.

The 6.3 magnitude quake struck around midday about 15 miles north of the city of Salta, some 800 miles north-northwest of the capital Buenos Aires, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

An 8-year-old boy died and two other children were injured, a hospital director in Salta told local media.

1. Not a good day in South America.
I hope it doesn't travel up the coast.

2. This morning I told hubby I was heading to an ATM
to replenish our house money. When an earthquake hits, you'd better have cash close by as electricity and ATMs will vanish overnight.
Will Jamaica be next - we haven't had a big quake in decades.

3. Certainly possible.
One can trigger another along the line.

Good advice about the ATMs

4. Everyone should have money placed in strategic places
including that emergency bag for national disasters and nothing else. We used up our hurricane emergency money since we had no hurricanes last year and now we're fretting about earthquakes before we start preparing for the next hurricane season. Better to prepare than not to prepare.

6. A safe is a bad idea for an earthquake emergency
Who's reaching a safe in the middle of an earthquake?

We have a small safe - it's great for a hurricane. Better to roll up that money and place it in a medicine container in your ever-ready first aid kit with your emergency papers.

8. I always kept a gas cut off key tied outside my house to the main for the gas line
Edited on Sat Feb-27-10 09:16 PM by flyarm
into the house that came in real handy after we went through the Northridge quake..and we had a family plan..which doesn't always help but can help some..My husbands job was to get outside and shut off the gas to the house..I always kept a small mag flashlight tied to the head post..that came in real handy..as our bed ( very heavy bed) moved across the room like it was a feather..so the flashlight went with us..and in my nightstand i had a small plastic zip bag with passports ..some cash and birth certitifcates..and a copy of the front page of our insurance policy..all came in handy in the days following the earthquake when our home was red tagged and we were not allowed to re-enter our home.

During the quake we could not walk..I crawled to my sons room..the fastest i ever crawled in my life!!! ..where he was trapped in his bed with the hot water heater that came through the wall..there was much chaos..and screaming ..as all was dark..but i had the flashlight ..my husband turned the water off and pulled my son out from under the water heater which also had my sons top of his dresser on top of it..( all had been earthquake tied ..but all failed the ties) then my husband ran out and turned the gas off..as fires were coming up from the streets all around us..from gas breaks and leaks.

There would have been no time to get a safe out..so I was very happy I was, as I was called by some friends "a neurotic nut" to have my flashlight tied to the bed..and my small pouch with some nessessary papers in the nightstand draw. And the most important thing I had done was tied the gas Key to the outside receptical where the main could be turned off.

It is good to have a family plan..it may not go as anticipated ..but it does help.

If you live in an earhtquake prone area..do have that gas key.. where you do not have to look for it! AND A FLASHLIGHT WHERE YOU DO NOT HAVE TO LOOK FOR IT! WHEN STUFF IS FALLING ALL AROUND YOU ..YOU DO NOT HAVE THE LUXURY TO FIND THINGS! And if you have children they will be your first concern..you will fight through hell to get to them!

9. unless it burns while you aren't in the house. Then you lose your money.
You can get a small fire and water proof box at your local office supply store. They are protable.
