Missile agency’s ‘crescent moon’ logo scares right-wingers

The conservative blogosphere is abuzz about the new logo of the US Missile Defense Agency, which they say looks suspiciously similar to both the Obama campaign logo and the crescent moon typically seen on Islamic flags.

On Wednesday, the Drudge Report posted a picture of the agency's new logo -- a blue crescent with a wave of red stripes emerging from it -- above pictures of the Obama campaign logo and a crescent moon and star, a typical theme on flags of Islamic nations.

But the particular crescent moon chosen by Drudge appears not to be part of any flag, but rather the symbol of the Nation of Islam.

"New Missile Defense Agency Logo Causes Online Commotion," reads the Drudge headline, though it links only to the home page of the Missile Defense Agency. Another headline below links to the Wikipedia page on Islamic flags, which does not feature the crescent "flag" Drudge used.

Blogger Frank Gaffney, writing at BigGovernment.com, a Web site run by Drudge ally Andrew Breitbart, says the new logo may be a sign that the Obama administration has "nefarious" plans for US defense.

1. One of Drudge's friends wets his pants
And that translates into a "commotion." Ignore the children, let the grown-ups conduct the affairs of the nation.

2. I see marketing companies are still using logos/symbols
to make emblems look like they're moving forward. I would have thought that that particular marketing gimmick would be passe by now:shrug:

10. It's not a gimmick. It's a solution.

The application may appear to be a little dated (i.e internet 90s), but the underlying approach has been around for a while now.

21. Everything is cyclical. For example, I lived through the 80's only to see its
design style come back to haunt us twice now.

If somebody can squeeze a few extra drops out of an idea then they'll do it; especially if they don't have to come up with something original.

Passe is easy. Good work is harder. There is a world of passe being spawned as I write this.

That being said, the aesthetic of the circle with an orbiting "swoosh" has been around so long, probably back into the 1930s and before, that it is part of the lexicon of design approaches.

You could have a really good logo, worked on for a few hundred hours, that uses that aesthetic and plenty of really crappy ones done on the fly in an evening.

My own professional opinion is that the logo has its problems and does appear to have been done some time ago.

Perhaps a designer pulled that particular design out of his filing cabinet from years past, dusted it off and sold it as new.

I always wanted to do that... :)

16. Ha! Good point!
Frankly, it looks like the red and white stripes are attacking a part of the blue crescent. That should have calmed the reich wingers.

17. I was reading one of the right wing loony sites earlier.
One dirty bigot got itself confused and thought that the old logo was the new one so it wrote

Oh, also, the new logo has a highly abstracted suggestion of the United States (green) and the Atlantic Ocean (blue). I think the formless blog that represents our nation is actually representative of Obama’s vision for our country. He wants to take it down, make us less great, “level the playing field,” and so forth.

or

It could be taken to mean that it’s not even clear which nation he’s defending, the form is so meaningless.

Then it developed a brain cell

Ignore my comment #17. I flipped which logo was new and which was the original one. OK. Super creepy. (As for my #17 comments, just shows to go you how much one can interpret and read into things!) I hang my head in shame. BUT, comment #16 still applies, irrespective of logo or no logo issue.

If ignorance is bliss, then the life of the typical tea-bagging Rethug must be heavenly.
