Ah, I Love My Facebook
now, I come from an area in the northwest known for its rampant conservatism.

I have a lot of friends living the conservative hypocrisy dream. these are your tried and true sarah palin lovers, that sorta thing. hell I've even got people who have lost their job and trying to get state funded health care for real problems because they can't afford insurance and whatnot and still are like, "damn that obama."

I've noticed that many of them have lately been like, "derp der derp, I needs to put your news feed on ignore because I no likey your messages so just mail me its nothing personal."

here's the fucking thing. if you have a belief system, and an ideology, you had better well be able to fucking defend it. you shouldn't NEED to ignore people. you shouldn't NEED to put you head in the sand. you shouldn't NEED to hide from reality.

this is the problem with conservatives, is that more than anything, it's like bill maher says. these are people railing against taxes and economics and the system, yet they know nothing about taxes or economics or the system.

this represents probably the greatest triumph of the conservative movement.

keep people stupid, keep them in fear of facts, the rest will take care of itself.

I personally welcome conflict with my conservative friends who do challenge me and vice versa, but I've noticed they are few and far between. and none of them are sarah palin fans, thats for damn sure.

1. My favorite thing that they do
is when you show them that they are wrong with facts, they say, "Well I don't believe that. We'll just have to agree to disagree."

8. Ah yes, the parachute when they run out of argument
"We'll just have to agree to disagree."
"Well, it depends on who you listen to."
"I don't trust any of them."
"I think I hear my mother calling."

:silly:

10. or if you quote any news source other than Fox it's LIBERAL
My in-laws do that all the time. Any fact from other than fox can't be trusted. they are so limited to their information - yet we're the ones being brainwashed by the messiah Obama.so frustrating.

11. From their point of view, it is liberal
but the relativism argument falls flat statistically: what are the chances that every other outlet is skewed, and the one I watch is accurate?

Maybe in the future we'll be able to customize our news programming so that only those viewpoints we already agree with are presented :silly:

19. but if these people cared about things like statistics,
they probably wouldn't even be conservatives.

Reality is a very fluid concept to Republicans. Whatever makes them feel good must be true.

13. yeah
its all about reinforcing their own corrupt and flawed viewpoints rather than accepting facts.

like they'll be like, well glenn beck said such and such

and it's like, yes but these scientists said this.

"well they're wrong."

it's like, do you trust glenn beck, a guy who barely graduated high school, to do brain surgery or do you hire a goddamn specialist?!?!

3. As Ayn Rand would say:
"Contradictions do not exist. Whenever you think you are facing a contradiction, check your premises. You will find that one of them is wrong."

Maybe your friends should check into that.

6. In general I wouldn't want to be caught quoting Ayn Rand...
...but that quote, I have to admit, is a good one.

14. I'd modify the quote a little bit myself...
"Contradictions do not exist. Whenever you think you are facing a contradiction, check your premises. You will find that at least one of them is wrong." :)

24. Ayn Rand has to stop having once said clever things.
I just stumbled upon another Ayn Rand quote I like:

"When you see corruption being rewarded and honesty becoming a self-sacrifice - you may know that your society is doomed."

Unfortunately for Rand, the world favored by her philosophy would quite often reward clever deception far better than honesty.

5. conservatives take "self censorship"
top an extreme level... as we all know, even into trying to censor the rest of us.

...somehow believing that if they are insulted or find something offensive, it should be illegal.

16. I put my conservative "friends" on hide as soon as i find out they're conservatives
there's only been 2, and they're men, and their issue is abortion. i just don't think there's any point in hearing it from them, because they are imprevious to reason and will never change their mind.

i recognize that we have to reach out and make common ground, etc., but i seriously don't enjoy talking to people who truly believe obama is a communist or that beck is anything but dangerous.

15. Religion has a big hand in keeping people stupid.
Religion by definition is "faith" -- dogma without facts. It gets people into the mindset of just swallowing a bunch of nonsense and not questioning it, not asking for facts or evidence.

17. Sometimes you get tired of defending yourself to people that
won't change or are just plain rude. I reserve the right to ignore or not respond to anyone I want. I do not think it is my job to defend my position or change someone's opinion. I like having discussions but I am done beating my head against the wall. I lived in the rural south for a while and know the consequences of voicing unpopular opinions. Some people deserve to be ignored and thankfully we have that option here at DU.
