In the 1950s, conservative Republicans were in the wilderness, for the Republican Party was dominated by people like President Eisenhower and the moderate Eastern wing of the party. Conservatives called the philosophy that Republicans like Eisenhower embraced "Me Too-ism."
Then, in 1964, the Republicans nominated Mr. Conservative-Senator Barry Goldwater. They lost in a landslide, but the stage was set for a gradual conservative takeover of the GOP, culminating in the election of Ronald Reagan as President in 1980.
After that, the 1980s saw the beaten Democrats create the Democratic Leadership Council-which is the new "Me Too-ism." Only, instead of Republicans embracing liberal ideas, it was Democrats embracing CONSERVATIVE ideas.
I see Clinton and Obama as a mirror of Eisenhower and Nixon-people who threw some bones to the liberals in campaigns, but governed from a centrist position that tilted towards the opposing party.
And I think that the grassroots network that Obama's campaign created, much like the grassroots network that propelled Goldwater to the nomination for the GOP in 1964, will come back and elect a true liberal Democrat from the liberal wing of the Democratic Party.
So, all is not lost. There is still hope, and we will elect a liberal Democratic President within the next few decades. That's my prediction.
