Police in my yard right now, neighbor getting busted. ((pics)) ((update))
Edited on Sat Feb-20-10 06:55 PM by Xicano
The cop in my yard (4th pic) looks like he stepped in my dog's doodoo. LOL

I don't yet know the reason why my neighbor is getting busted.

((update)) I was able to talk with one of the police, but, I was fed a BS line I am sure. He told me neighbors complained someone from that house was shooting a pellet gun. If fact I am sure that was just a BS line because the helicopter when all the police first arrived was calling out the name of my neighbor to come out. Pellet gun story just doesn't add up.

Getting pics of this ain't worth getting shot and those cops look like they could start squeezing off rounds at the slightest perception of provocation.

70. My experience with the New Haven PD is that they ask YOU if you can give
any information about illegal activities. A neighbor of ours had a break in and the police were outside since it was next door to us and asked me as I came out if I had seen anybody during the time of the robbery. I had not, but then, I don't look out of my windows during the day (it wouldn't occur to me). Spouse and I now believe it was an "inside" job, meaning a friend of the neighbors knew where the stuff was (a fur coat in the upstairs closet was stolen, for instance) and knew when they were there and not there and broke in. It was very suspicious to me...but I think that's probably what happened...

There is not a single sniper rifle in any of those pics. All of the them are for short to mid range kill shots.

What these cops are, given their positioning and haircuts, ex-military. And given how many of our soldiers are coming back with untreated PTSD, don't you think that giving them killing weapons and putting them in any police situation where they have to make life and death decisions is a little nuts UNTIL we actually start giving our veterans correct and enough treatment to deal with the mental issues some of them have come home with?

Just my 2 cents.

and that you've got still pictures.

This is a SWAT standoff and you can bet it'll hit the evening news.

Your neighbor either did something spectacularly bad or the cops have the wrong house. The former is a lot more likely.

59. That looks very serious. Is that a SWAT team?
If it is drugs, it is a lot, and the person must be considered armed and dangerous. Keep us posted.

My brother used to be on the SWAT team, and they only did stuff like that for serious stuff. Hostage situation, murderer, armed and dangerous person on the loose, etc. If they ever did it for drugs, it was usually a meth lab, and the people were always considered armed and dangerous if they used that kind of force. Stay safe. You can find out soon enough, so don't be too anxious to see what is going on.

Los Angeles medical marijuana dispensary bust
Posted by Mark Frauenfelder, August 1, 2008 3:41 PM

The LA Times reports on a DEA raid at Organica Collective, a Culver City medical marijuana dispensary.

Gina Ferazzi's photos of the raid are wonderful. My favorite is the one of a hipster-looking agent with a healthy soul-patch on his chin and a giant pistol on his belt.
The federal operation came on the same day an appellate court in San Diego ruled that federal law does not preempt the state's law allowing the use of medical marijuana -- a ruling touted by supporters of California's medical marijuana law as a significant win.
...
Clyde Carey, 50, of Marina del Rey was at the store Friday visiting a friend when agents burst in through the locked front door, he said.
"We heard some noise outside, and then the door literally burst in, and the DEA came in in full combat gear, told everybody to get on the floor and put their hands behind their heads," Carey said. "It was like, literally, an episode of "24," when they bust in on a terrorist cell."

Carey, who said he has multiple sclerosis and has been a dispensary customer since February, stood across the street near a Starbucks with about half a dozen people who had witnessed the raid, watching agents walk in and out.
He said DEA agents searched and cuffed the roughly 25 people inside the building, which also includes four upstairs rooms. Then agents started searching the premises, removing computers, medicine and money, and using a steel cylinder battering ram to get into the upstairs bedrooms, Carey said.

OK? Now say you're sorry for calling what I said "ridiculous". :hippie:

the guys have itchy trigger fingers. They don't want to kill someone, I promise you.

It is a shame that happened, but to act like that happens all of the time is ridiculous. I don't think every cop is an angel either. They don't make the laws. I know many who don't agree with some of the laws they have to enforce. Bad situations happen with cops, I know that. I saw the Rodney King beating. Unfortunately, the shitty cops ruin it for the good ones. I can see the news reporting the good cops do. Oh wait, that isn't good news. Only the shitty stuff is good to put on the news. Ride a night with a cop, and just see the people they have to deal with and the things they have to see.

Now let's just say there is an armed murderer on the loose next door to you, would you be ok with this kind of take down? Would you have been ok with a cop running into a burning building, risking their life to save yours? Would you want to be the guy who found a murdered little 6 year old in a garbage can? Would you want to be the person who had to go tell the parents their child died in a car accident? Being a cop isn't just about busting people for drugs and writing tickets. They aren't all motherfuckers.

287. DEA agents are scummy looking....
If a DEA Agent uses Cocaine in the line of duty.. to trap other users... doesn't that make him part of the problem.. not the solution?

If a DEA Agent picks up a few hundred dollars from a floating crap game behind the projects and sticks the money in his pocket... doesn't that add up to the same thing as armed robbery?

Only if government does it.. it's "OK".

The WOD is the real problem.

239. Maybe the situation is different where you're at Shel.
Here it varies A LOT from county to county and city to city. Some of them have official or unofficial rules that they treat misdemeanor possession as their lowest priority, or something to that effect. Others do anything but.

The worst story I know of happened pretty close to me- there's a gardening store that specializes in hydroponic gardening stuff, grow lights, etc. Now of course you can get all that to start your tomatoes inside early, or to grow your own pot, but honestly most of it's probably for pot, we have a really long growing season here for most anything you can put outside without getting arrested.

So the cops from the next county over (!) were driving over to this place, following the patrons home, then digging through their trash bins for any evidence they were growing pot. This resulted in quite a few incidents that looked like the above, for old folks with cancer or AIDS or whatever growing a little pot for themselves and a few sick friends. The reason is this: if they bust you for distro and get a conviction, they can seize any of your assets used in the crime, which means if you drove your car into town to get some organic fertilizer for your plants you've just given the county mounties a car, and if your grow lights were in your bedroom closet you just gave them a house, too.

There's no incentive not to be an abusive dick when there's so much money in it.

I'm saying there are far too many activists, growers, and dispensaries for them to ever win their dumbass war on medicinal pot.

It was terrifying. Some enighbor called that they saw a plant. one plant. the cops were so mad they didn't find more that they treated him doubly bad. Threw his whole house apart looking for intent to distribute, which of course, there was not. The whole thing was right out of a rambo movie. I saw it with my own eyes. LAPD. Ask people in Joe Arpaio's area.

http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5jPkUf9Hf3bYW25OGLnwMpaM3v7hAD9DRL2VG0

A federal judge has found grounds for sanctioning an Arizona sheriff's office for its acknowledged destruction of records in a lawsuit that accuses deputies of racially profiling countless Hispanics in immigration patrols.

U.S. District Judge Murray Snow held off on imposing the sanctions against the office of Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio in the Friday ruling, but indicted he would do so at a later date once related issues were ironed out.

Since early 2008, Arpaio has run 13 immigration and crimes sweeps consisting of deputies and posse volunteers who flood an area of a city — in some cases heavily Latino areas — to seek out traffic violators and arrest other offenders.

The handful of Latinos who filed the lawsuit against Arpaio's office alleged that officers based some traffic stops on the race of Hispanics who were in vehicles, had no probable cause to pull them over and made the stops so they could inquire about their immigration status.

Arpaio is known for tough jail policies, including housing inmates in canvas tents, and pushing the bounds for how local law enforcement agencies can confront illegal immigration.

The U.S. Justice Department said it's investigating his office for alleged discrimination and for unconstitutional searches and seizures, but won't provide any details of its examination. The sheriff believes the inquiry is focused on his immigration efforts.

Arpaio has repeatedly denied the racial profiling allegations, saying people pulled over in the sweeps were approached because deputies had probable cause to believe they had committed crimes. It was only afterward that deputies found many of them were illegal immigrants, he has said.

more at the link and there's tons more out there.

There are a great many law abiding people who are at the poverty level. I was. When I taught high school in 80s, I was earning a grand total of $9800 a year and raising two homeless teenagers in a one bedroom apartment. AND, going to grad school.

Being poor doesn't give you carte blanche to disregard the law. Not talking stealing bread to feed the fam, here either and I think you know that.

Remember? Lawrence v. Texas?

Well, guess what. Unlike consensual adult sodomy in Texas pre-Lawrence, Medical Marijuana is also the LAW in many states, and furthermore, the criminalization of a relatively benign plant, and the 60 million otherwise law-abiding citizens who smoke it in the privacy of their own homes, is WRONG, too.

Yet we spend $40 Billion a year on helicopters, armored vehicles, and heavily armed swat teams to wage "war" on it. It's fucking idiotic, it's a travesty of injustice, and it's well past time the we the voters and taxpayers put an end to that nonsense.

176. Completely different from a kid dealing drugs.
Private versus interfering with my right to not have a drug dealer on my street endangering my family.

I don't give a rat's ass what people do in their bedrooms. If you want to smoke pot? Have at it. Just keep your neighbors out of it, so we don't have to be concerned that our cars will end up as destroyed as yours when one of your deals goes wrong.

And this is an upper middle class neighborhood. Not the inner city.

And yet I'm more convinced than ever that the drug war is a waste and a sham.

I'm glad to hear you're not concerned about what people do in the privacy of their own homes, although it's sort of surprising you're not concerned that we piss away $40B in tax dollars every year to pursue and prosecute people for exactly that sort of thing. The prisons are filled to capacity with non-violent drug offenders, lots of them users- not dealers.

And like I said, it's been a long time since I've been a pot smoker, but I have a hard time believing that all of a sudden every time a hippie buys an eighth there are shotgun-wielding thugs around every corner. I still go to shows where some folks, I've heard, do stuff like buy pot in the parking lot. I haven't noticed any uptick in bandana wearing gangbangers taking over the jamband weed circuit. Something like 50 or 60 million people smoke pot in this country, most of them otherwise law abiding folks who go to work and pay their taxes. And if there is crime around the pot trade, hey-- it's all the more reason to legalize it.

But if whatever-it-is that's taking place in your upper class neighborhood is troubling you so much, call the cops. Seriously.

197. If there are crazy people coming in and out of the house across
the street at all hours of the night in my neighborhood, I would also turn them in. It isn't narc'ing. It is about me protecting my child. I have no clue what kind of drugs they may be doing. They may be high as a kite on pot and be fine, but many times drug deals can involve weapons. Not ok with me. People get killed over a damned nickel bag. Doesn't mean I think pot should be illegal, but illegal activities can bring out the worst in people. Drug dealers are often targets. I don't want that across the street from me.

the kids and I came home from some school thing and DD (drug dealer)'s car had been smashed to bits with something like a bat or a pipe.

My friend across the street heard it. It was pretty damned scary. But, hey. I want little DD to be able to sell his drugs because if he doesn't? He might actually have to get a legitimate job and then what would happen?

I, nor my neighbors, will never apologize for what this kid did. If it was for personal use and didn't spill over to violence in the 'hood? Not interested. He put my kids at risk. Unacceptable.

And, his mother is an asshole for putting up with this.

Our children are our future. They are precious. We must do everything to protect them. It has nothing to do with pot either. And if anyone here thinks that calling the cops on any drug dealer is wrong, then they are fools. People get killed every day over a bad drug deal. I will not have that going on across the street from me. Period. I would be happy for people to go smoke their pot and eat and laugh or whatever they want to do, but that isn't reality. If someone feels shortchanged, they may have no problem pulling out a gun. It happens every single day in too many places.

That people smoke pot and then start pulling out guns?

Like I said, if there's crime around the drug trade, it's directly related to prohibition and its attendant idiocy. Al Capone and the gangs with tommyguns were an outgrowth of alcohol prohibition, not the alcohol itself. Of course, I've seen a helluva lot more violent, angry drunks than violent, angry stoners. Unlike you, who apparently lives on the Planet of Dangerous Potheads ---straight out of "Reefer Madness".

Speaking of what isn't reality.

I actually said it had nothing to do with pot at all. It is really more about money and the fact that it is illegal. But to think that people don't get popped because they cheated someone on drugs (whatever the drugs may be) is silly. I don't care if everyone around me smokes pot. Good for them. The world may be a better place if more people did smoke pot, but it is the dealing that causes problems because of the money involved. And no, I don't want that going on next door to me.

I can't disagree with you there.
I would love to see pot legalized everywhere. But since it is illegal, and if I have some, I can't really bitch about getting busted for it. Cops don't make things illegal. And many will let someone go if they have a small amount, but they could also lose their jobs for doing so. Change the laws.

169. I was pulled over one time for no reason and given a speeding ticket when I wasn't speeding
I filed a complaint and was told I was in a neighborhood with drug houses and when the cop traced my plates and discovered I didn't live in that neighborhood he must have decided I was there to buy drugs. A woman in her 40s driving down a main street in a van with a bumper sticker from my kid's school looked like a druggie to this cop?

My husband was a long haired hippie musician in the 60s and his entire band was held overnight in a small town jail for driving down the street.

I have black friends who won't come over to my house because of the racial profiling by cops in the suburban city where I live.

You must live a charmed life. Cops do indeed treat law abiding citizens like shit. Not all of them but it does happen. You are delusional if you believe it does not. Or if you believe that never breaking the law means you will never have a problem with the police. Good luck with that plan. LOL

277. Dude, it's no laughing matter.
I'm a big galoot - I have to start almost any interaction with police by defusing "short cop syndrome'. I've been rousted for DWI while stone cold sober, taking a 10 min. nap in a safe spot - because a passenger had been drinking, so they could'nt drive. I've seen vehicles impounded because a passenger was the wrong kind of people. I've seen an ex-MP kick kids "into shape" at gunpoint, and use handcuffs as instruments of assault. It's a practice of a neighboring jurisdiction to strand those released from custody 50 miles from where they were arrested. Should protective custody involve pepper spray? I can go on a long ways... and it's not so funny.
Yes, there are some good, hardworking police officers. And there are thugs with badges. And overcompensating jerks, and drunks.

It happened to me once as a child, twice as an adult. I'm not part of the cop hate bandwagon around here -- I worked for a PD and I have three family members who are LE. I respect MOST cops for doing well at a hard job, but I also know that not all cops should be in that job and that some departments (LAPD being one of them) are known for going overboard.

A cops job, when talking to anyone is to close a case. In many cases it has less to do with guilt or innocence rather than closing the case. If a cop is asking you a question, it isn't to pass the time or to eliminate you as a perp. It is to close the books.

And yes, I used to be an officer.

I agree with you cops are wussies, but you're wrong about them not entering pot shops like that. Hell, I have a friend who had a legal prescription for a med, but bought it through the mail from Canada because it was so much cheaper than here. A full SWAT regiment like the one in the OP crashed into her house in the middle of the night one night, tore up her whole house while training automatic rifles on her and her husband (they were in bed, it was midnight). They found the one bottle of med along with all her other (U.S. bought) pharmacy products for her condition, and left. They didn't even take the med they invaded for. So please don't assume all cops act the way you may have witnessed. There's an awful lot of overkill in an awful lot of police work.

Especially cops. I always stand close with my camera when cops are talking to someone on the street. Documentation keeps them more honest, and can be used against them if they go to far.

210. I believe you are incorrect.
You can film anybody in a public area. You can film anybody in a non public area so long as you are in a public area or on your own property. Recoding sound of a private conversation without permission is where you start getting into violating the law. Filming from private property where you got no permission to be on said property is not lawful. Obstructing police from performing their duty is not lawful.

Lawsuits filed by the ACLU have established that photographing or filming law enforcement officials is a First Amendment right which ensures that citizens have the ability to monitor government.

292. The charge would be disobeying the lawful order of a police officer.
But that order is rarely lawful. In the cases where it is lawful it usually involves matters of national security. Police misuse and abuse that charge because they mis-cite it. They say it as disobeying the direct order of a police officer. But it's actually disobeying the lawful order of a police officer. That is in deed a crime. But you are free to disobey any unlawful order given by any authority. That goes all the way back to English common law.

100. If the photographer is not interfering, then law enforcement has no right
to ask a citizen to stop filming or taking photographs.

Law enforcement may abuse their power and illegally arrest photographers and damage or destroy equipment but, when cities have been sued over such behavior, the city (and law enforcement) loses based on First Amendment rights.

The Photographer’s Right is a downloadable guide that is loosely based on the Bust Card and the Know Your Rights pamphlet that used to be available on the ACLU website. It may be downloaded and printed out using Adobe Acrobat Reader. You may make copies and carry them in your wallet, pocket, or camera bag to give you quick access to your rights and obligations concerning confrontations over photography. You may distribute the guide to others, provided that such distribution is not done for commercial gain and credit is given to the author.

Did you bother to read anything in "The Photographer's Right" that I, and others, provided the link to?

Members of the public have a very
limited scope of privacy rights when
they are in public places. Basically,
anyone can be photographed without
their consent except when they have
secluded themselves in places where
they have a reasonable expectation of
privacy such as dressing rooms, restrooms,
medical facilities, and inside
their homes.

One officer that did respond with something other than please go back inside said neighbors complained about this guy shooting off a potato gun. Ahhh, yeah right, sorry, but, I don't buy it. Of course I was polite and said thanks officer.

Potato gun story doesn't add up. All that firepower over a potato gun? The helicopter calling out my neighbor's name to come out. My neighbor not coming out. Over a potato gun? Sorry but that doesn't add up.

cops gunned down a friend of mine in front of his kids last year when his ex-wife called in a BS story about him "threatening" her (he'd been making them waffles and eggs for breakfast-there were no "threats"). The overreaction by the SWAT team triggered his Gulf War PTSD and he finally stepped outside -with a gun at his side. He didn't point it at anyone, but they gunned him down anyway. He never trusted cops and wrote "everyone know that I'm not suicidal. Remember that when they kill me" on Facebook right before he stepped out of his home. :-(

174. Just my 2 cents Shel Beau.
I know too many police officers to actually believe that they are here to or give a shit about protecting and serving. They exist to bring the hammer down when little people get out of line and start to annoy the big people. Any benefit they may seem to provide the community is incidental.

Look at this outrageous show of force over a pellet gun. They didn't NEED to invade this neighborhood bringing dozens of assault weapons around peoples families. They did it because they get a hard on every time they get to dress up and play swat.

The same cop that you think is there to protect you and your family wouldn't hesitate to go to town on you with a billy club if ordered to do so.

And I know him. I know why he is a cop. I know what he has gone through while being a cop. I know why he chose to be a cop. People forget that cops are people. Like I told someone else in this thread, ride with a cop for one night. A night where nothing big even happens. You can't imagine the shit cops see. The worst of the worst on a daily basis.

And we have no clue why this bust is going down, nor does the OP. Something else is going on here.

ETA: my brother is no longer a cop. He is now a state trooper which is an even more dangerous job because he rarely has backup.

249. A cop, my ex brother in law, hired someone to try kill my sister. They were married.
Edited on Sun Feb-21-10 12:19 AM by Forkboy
He was "caught" by an undercover State Trooper who then recanted on the stand, letting my brother in-law walk away...and leaving my sister and her son living in fear for years. The same son who he took scissors to, placed them around his penis and threatened to cut it off if he didn't stop crying....at 6 years old.

I HAVE ridden with him and others. I know what cops see (crime scenes, suicide scenes...saw it all by age 16). I've watched them lie on the stand, more than once. I also know what cops have told me, including this one. Things like planting weapons on the "niggers". Things like telling me he'd shoot my friend dead if given the chance. This wasn't an isolated thing. He was a uniform officer and then a detective in a decent sized urban area. He was promoted. He was well liked by the whole force, a "funny" guy, always a joke at the ready. I didn't forget he is "people"....he did. Your brother may be good, but until he stands up to his comrades that aren't I'm not impressed. I've seen that for decades now...good cops intimidated by those that aren't. Either they find the courage to speak up or they deserve the association with the bad ones. It can't be both. If that bothers you or your brother, feel free to have him PM me.

I'm not saying the cops in this story are wrong. But guess again when you say that we can't imagine what cops see. I've seen it, both good and bad. I'm lucky my sister is still alive, not due to the police...in spite of them.

313. That is terrible. I can't imagine what kind of pain your
sister must have gone through. I know there are terrible cops out there. And your sister's situation is one of the worst. But they aren't all that way. My brother did stand up to a bad cop. He arrested one for stealing from crime scenes.

By the way, if I were a police helicopter pilot, I've always thought it would be fun to have a badge that said, "WHEN PIGS FLY". Not as a reference to something unlikely, but more like a "WHEN ANIMALS ATTACK" sort of thing.

Reminds me of the old days when I lived down there. Once the neighbors called them because a couple of painters in one of the apartments were getting drunk and allowing their dogs to terrorize those neighbor's pets and they wouldn't listen to reason. They were loud and laughing at the person, but I don't think they were dangerous, just drinking too much at lunchtime. We basically just wanted someone to talk some sense to them and get rid of them. They arrived exactly like your pictures, SWAT, helicopters, etc. when all they needed were a couple of squad cars and animal control. Well, I guess they have to be ready for any danger.

213. That is impressive ....
It is the SWAT Team. They need the SWAT Team for a pellet gun? No way. The snipers are in body armor. I'd like to see what kind of pellets would pierce that.

I thought it was only my neighbor across the street who got a police response like this. About every 12 to 18 months, there are the police yelling at him through a bull horn and in full swat regalia. My husband and I just hunker down in the bedroom and watch TV until they disarm him which can take hours. He favors shotguns though. The police who keep coming out are a little more open than your guys. Besides, it is hard not to hear a bullhorn.

Keep your head down and stay inside. If they are not gone by 1:00 AM you might as well go to bed because they will be there all night. My life with LAPD SWAT teams.

286. I never heard that acronym ...
what is the difference between the two? My neighbor had the anti gang unit out once too, but they came in unmarked cars and didn't try to talk them out. They just said come out or they were going in. When my neighbor's kids came out they were in leg irons. They had ordered all of us out of our houses by mistake by yelling over the bullhorns, "All of you, come to your front gate with your hands up."

When I shambled out there, all up and down the street the neighbors were standing in front of their houses looking startled. Some of them did have their hands up. When the police saw that, they clarified by giving the address where they wanted the people to come out with their hands up. That is when I saw the kids in leg irons. The rest of us they told to go back in and not to come out again. The neighbor across the street yelled, "Can I put my hands down?" I went back in wondering if he was kidding. I hope so. ;)

Perhaps you could apply a Barkley-Phipps regression analysis based on the positions of the officers, generating a finite-state, Bayesian algorithm that can determine why they were really there. IF you can input enough data.

321. ((Update)) Believe it or not it was for a Potato Gun.
Here's the who story. A neighbor called the police to complain about the guy who got arrested yesterday for shooting a pellet gun in his back yard. However it wasn't a pellet gun, it was a Potato Gun. All that for that? How ridiculous is that?

I don't know about everyone else, but I kindda rather it would of been for something else more serious because talk about over kill. I mean is a SWAT team going to come out if someone spits on the sidewalk?

326. They call it a Potato "Gun". Technically, it's a Potato "Launcher".
Doesn't sound so nefarious when it's called a launcher, now does it?

For the cops to throw so many resources for such a minor infraction doesn't seem right. 1 squad car with 2 officers should have been sufficient. They were obviously using this incident as an excuse to perform a training operation.

380. In the central and south central plains
the osage orange became known for the impenetrable hedge rows they make. Now they are better known around here as hedge than osage orange. I am in the 10-15 year process of growing a traditional hedge. They are planted 3' apart, every spring we weave the previous years growth with the neighboring tree. It makes a thorny, unbelievably tough barrier that a dog can't even get through.

365. The "overkill" game, as you put it, is intended to protect their lives.
That's the main reason cops don't show up for a friendly chat when there's a report of shooting. The justification when it's a report of drugs is the presumption that where there's drugs there are weapons. The large number of cops required for this strategy means either more cops must be on duty each shift or other law enforcement goes by the wayside. It also seems to create a siege mentality in some departments, like the LAPD, and as you wrote, it frightens communities in the process.

368.  I wrote nothing about freeway chases or shackling women in labor.
On the specific point of why so many officers are sent in response to a call involving weapons, or in the case of drug busts the presumption of presence of weapons, the strategy was developed to minimize the injury and death to cops. As I wrote before, it's created a bit of a siege mentality and that in turn creates more fear OF cops in communities.

That's hilarious --

We have citizens arming themselves because they fear their neighbors who have guns.

We have police officers armed because criminals are armed.

And, we have goverment working overtime to arm the public with guns/weapons!

And now you say we have to send more heavily armed swat teams because . . .

of the possibility of weapons!!

could chuck a half-pound Idaho about 100 yards with pretty good accuracy. If I remember correctly it was operated by a charge of hair spray. No shit.

Seems to me if they really had a complaint about a guy holed up in a house with a potato gun they should have sent over a team with a flame thrower so they could make some home fries.

They probably didn't do that because they were afraid one of the Scat Team might go off half-baked.
