Democrats Call Out Republican Leaders For Their 'Bizarre' Statements

http://onthehillblog.blogspot.com/2010/02/democrats-call-out-gop-leaders-for.html

-snip-

In an email to supporters titled "Bizarre," the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) calls attention to statements made at last weekend's Tea Party Convention in Nashville, Tenn.

"Did you hear about last weekend's National Tea Party Convention? We could laugh it off as the lunatic fringe, but that would miss the point," says the email from DSCC Executive Director J.B. Poersch. "The ascendancy of this right-wing, angry, populist movement isn't funny -- it's dangerous. And these activists have their eyes on the Senate."

-snip-

National Tea Party Convention speaker and former Republican presidential candidate Tom Tancredo is calling for a return to segregation-era tactics. "We do not have a civics, literacy test before people can vote in this country," he said. "People who could not even spell the word 'vote' or say it in English put a committed socialist ideologue in the White House."

Convention speaker Joseph Farah represented the "birther" wing of tea party nation: "My dream is that if Barack Obama even seeks re-election as president in 2012 that he won't be able to go to any city … in America without seeing signs that ask, 'Where's the Birth Certificate?'"

Senate candidate Jane Norton of Colorado, "in a full pander to the tea party movement," wants the Department of Education abolished, "an idea so radical, even Newt Gingrich let it die."

1. It is about time the Democratic party grew a backbone
You can be sure that Republicans would be on the airways 24/7 if the Dems were saying things like this.

8. Yeah, but let's just remember whose interest they are looking out for here
Backbones only count when they involve sticking to Democratic principles

2. Teabaggers are incorrigible racists
99% of them anyway. Progressives shouldn't bother with them.

9. well, I don't agree to that Heli
when you are out working in the garden you need to turn over the rocks to make sure you don't get bitten by the scorpions and spiders. We need to keep shining light on them so that they can't multiply under their rocks.

11. It's hard to argue with people who are still looking for Obama's birth certificate
is what I meant. I completely share your view that they need to be exposed.

3. DSCC will take your money and fund Ben Nelson and Blanche Lincoln. It's "they are worse than us"
messaging. Is there any action ... crickets?

This is the evolution of the "sternly worded letter" that used to be sent to the offending party to protest whatever the behavior was (and continued without exception). Now the messages are to us. Go figure.

5. The DSCC wants to make this a BIG part of the campaign in 2010 - the lunatic RW fringe
the Republicans are coddling up to.

They want to force the Republicans to either repudiate the crazy Teabaggers and Birthers or own their crazy views for the entire voting public to see.

I could see them getting some of these lunatics saying that if they take back control of Congress that they will impeach Obama (why? any crazy reason will do) and then plaster that crap all over the air waves so the middle will have to realize who they would be putting in charge if they vote for Republicans.

6. Great, but they're preaching to the choir. Hope they pair this with some TV & radio ads.
On the other hand, it is useful as a GOTV tool. But do hope they give it a wider audience.

7. It really isn't that difficult
to go after some right wing fringe who speak at a gathering of 600 people. The Democrats need to show a bit of spine with their own party.

This kind of thing is easy. It's the actual day to day governing that the Democrats seem to have trouble with.
