1. It has always been that way....My Dad had a grocery store when I was growing up.
People would come in before a snow and clear the shelves. He would come home with stories of people buying five or six gallons of milk at a time without considering that others might need some. At the end of the storm he had customers actually try to return milk and meat when they realized they couldn't possibly use it all.

The big joke in my house was that we live in Bergen County N.J. and even if it snows three feet you aren't going to starve in a snow storm. Someone will be able to get to you with milk if you really need it.

It was an early lesson in just how easy it is for people to panic and over react.
